Visited Bamberg for a short city break with my family in March 2023. We have visited Germany many times and have had a great experience every time. I am a brewer from the the UK so was in my element in Bamberg but the holiday was marred on one occasion only by the rudest barman I have ever met!|Upon arriving I approached the self-service bar to ask the barman for two beers and a small glass of white wine while my parents found a table in the exterior drinking area. Although I made my order speaking German, the barman could tell by my accent that I was British and was immediately presented with a hostile attitude as if I was inconveniencing him - something I noticed he wasn’t presenting to German customers. When he gave me our drinks I received two beers and a large tankard of what looked like fizzy apple juice. My first thought was that he’d misunderstood my order. I apologised and said (in English this time) “I’m sorry I asked for a small white wine - kleiner weisswein” even using small hand gestures to politely help him understand. He turned round and said “Nein! Nur gross!” (No! Only large!”. After challenging him further and receiving further impoliteness it was clearly obvious that the barman was being difficult on purpose and the only explanation that we could determine is that we were British or non-German. We poured our “drinks” down the drain and left.|Bamberg is a fantastic place and there is plenty of great beer, wine and food to be enjoyed, I highly recommend a visit. Just don’t expect any hospitality at this particular place if you’re not German and come across this...

Read moreI seemed to be the only woman and youngest person by at least 30 years which was fine by me and probably normal for a Wednesday at noon? Despite that, I was well received by both the staff and the customers. The older male patrons were busy being boisterous and loud, making over exaggerated gestures and laughing with deep booming laughs. I was witnessing the very definition of merriment and my heart felt instantly warmed. I ordered a Golden Pils and I found it to be very delicious and refreshing for the abnormally warm March day. Fassla is one the Bamberg Bucket List Breweries and I definitely recommend checking it out. It was conveniently located and when it comes to beer, why not stop in. The more...
