The first time at Akkawy it was with my parents that were visiting Berlin. We were starving and Akkawy was open and right in front of us :) Never read any reviews, never heard about it. Have been travelling a lot in middle east countries, and the first impression I had once inside was like being back in Beirut, something I really appreciate. The welcome from Julian (the owner), the smell of food, the home made quality of the dishes, make everything even more special. It was September and since that I am back many times with friends, alone and now take away. Last December was my birthday and I decided to celebrate with few friends (5 due to restrictions). I ordered Zehra, Hummus, Mushrooms, Eggplant and Fattoush, all dishes I strongly invite you to try. Julian prepared everything in big bowls and casseroles which I used at home to serve the dinner. Everything was ready on time at 7:30pm and at 8pm we were having dinner. I had lunch and dinner for the following two days with the left over and the food was still tasty :) Well...
Read moreI don’t think they need my review, but i feel compelled to share…Wow! Been in Berlin over two decades and 95% of the joints in town professing to make hummus should go there and learn how it’s done. I had the shroom boom, and already when I ordered I sensed the exceptionally kind vibes that were present behind the counter. It makes such a huge difference. The guy was charming without talking to much, was service oriented, and actively inquired if I wanted this and that. So cool. The sandwich was generously packed, hummus amazing (and I’m NOT a big hummus freak), everything was fresh, and I was happily surprised by the exceptional olives on the side. Prices are just fine, and when I think that in some places have the nerve to charge over 5€ for a focaccia that was just placed on the grill with some cheese and vegetables, this is definitely a refreshing change. Not a believer, but feel like...
Read moreUPDATE: Unfortunately, I have to say that Akkawy really got worse over the last year! They don’t serve the nice bread anymore (now the cheapest pita bread is served with the hummus), the portions got smaller, the prizes higher, the complementary salad on the side disappeared and the orders are 9/10 times super delayed. There’s truly way better hummus places now in Berlin. Really a shame, since the two guys are really friendly and the place had great potential.
ORIGINAL POST: In these uncertain, difficult times I felt compelled to write a review! Akkawy offers the best hummus anywhere around east Berlin, especially love the one with mushroom topping. Also the Foul is surprisingly delicious. The service is great, friendly and genuine. The soul of this place! They do what they love and it’s not one of the heartless money grabbing places around Boxi and warschauer. Keep the good vibe going guys...
