One of my favorite breakfast days during my recent trip to Europe took place during a cold and misty morning in Berlin. Since this was my first day in Berlin, the trip had to kick off with a bang. I was on the hunt for a good donut and latte. Brammibal's Donuts was conveniently located about a mile away from where I was staying with my friends and they had some pretty awesome reviews online. This seemed like a no brainer from the beginning.
As I walked up to Brammibal's Donuts, I read their message board sitting outside the front door. It read, “100 % Vegan Donuts. Fresh. Handmade. And Coffee.” I was instantly sold.
I walked to the counter and browsed frantically through the selection of delicious looking donuts. I couldn't decide on which one to pick. Maple smoked coconut? Cinnamon sugar? I had to ask the young gal working behind the counter. “If you could eat any one of these donuts right now, at this very moment… which one would it be?” She answered, “The Boston cream.” Before I could accept the recommendation she was already handing it to me. The choice had been made… was it going to pay off?
Ha! It might've been the best donut I've ever had and I'm not exaggerating one bit. I've never had a 100% vegan donut that tasted this good. Everything about it was amazing. It was soft and warm with gooey chocolate caked over the top. Inside awaited a sweet and satisfying Boston cream filling. Very well balanced and jam packed full of flavor. Paired with a latte, this was a win.
I highly recommend Brammibal's Donuts to everyone. Just not people who are living the vegan lifestyle. These donuts are delicious no matter how you try to spin it. If you're looking for a tasty, sweet, and filling breakfast, Brammibal's is the place the place to go. #Berlin...
Read moreTLDR: - style over substance + leider geil. As the girlfriend of a regular donut maker I know what goes into making a donut and what an excellent donut tastes like. These are nice donuts. The dough is tender, well risen, not dry, but could be a bit richer. For 11 Euros / 4 donuts (2.75 or 3.25 per 1 donut) I would like perfection though. All the donuts use the same basic dough, which obviously cuts down on ingredients and labour, and they are mainly ring shaped. If you take a closer look at the toppings you can also see that the basic components are repeated a lot (again increasing margin). If you make a fruit jelly donut at this price point please actually fill the donut so the little jelly puddle on top doesn't just slop down after the first bite. The jelly was also flavourless and overset (agar agar?), and I think a classic fruit jam would have been the better choice. The strawberries and cream was definitely our favourite, the cream having a lovely texture and flavour for a dairyfree product. I've had glazed ones and the cinnamon sugar before which are lovely and the peanut butter fudge one is nice, I just find dark chocolate too harsh in combination with peanut butter, I'd prefer milk. So, the basic donuts are really well done IMO but too pricey, and the "fancy" donuts are more instagrammable than scrumptious. But hey, donuts, so I'll probably do an occasional self-loathing shuffle along the canal to get my fix, buying my coffee somewhere else...
Read moreIf you like donuts it's a simple fact that you'll love brammibals. The Kreuzburg location is a bustling and vibrant one (one of three I believe) with great views of the canal and for people watching.
There are a few staples that are always on offer like my personal favourite the Boston Cream and the classic sugar coated ring, with new flavours and combinations every month along with a special donut and it's proceeds going to a different cause. The inside is clean and minimal and is often busy throughout the day so it's best to get in early to grab a just baked donut as there is nothing better than a donut just out of the oven!
The staff are all super friendly and speak English and German which is greatly appreciated. Its also one of the few places that accepts card which is commendable! If you're a fan of coffee I can also reccomend Brammibals as well as some tasty bagel options. Personally I preferred the sandwiches (the hummus one was out of this world) so hopefully they make a...
