Since smash burgers finally hit Berlin, we have to also clearly differentiate between "regular" and smashed burgers.
As far as I can tell, Bürgermeister was the place to go for a smashed burger excursion. So I followed the hype and went to Goldies.
I normally get a double patty when it comes to smashed burgers. So I went for the double cheeseburger.
Let's break it down to its components comparing it to Bürgermeister's Fleischermeister for 7.90
The bun felt less buttery and not that much layered and airy. But nevertheless It was not too thin and mushy that it broke while eating.
A plus for Goldies is that they use finely chopped onions which gives a great crunch while eating.
The meat patties were really smashed and thin. Way thinner than at Bürgermeister's. Which gave them more crunch and more smokey flavor. The meat quality itself was equally good. But the super thinly smashed Version at Goldies comes with a downside, Which is that the meat juices stay on the griddle and not as flavor in the bun.
Now 4 very obvious downpoints are
The price with 9.90 (2 euro, more expensive than Bürgermeister)
The waiting time. Because of its hype we had to wait in line for 28min on a Tuesday
The size, it is for sure smaller and you get less bang for your buck.
No indoor seating. It's a hole in the wall with 2 benches in front of the stall.
Taking all of this in consideration I would stick with Bürgermeister.
BUT ! By no means is this a bad burger. It's tasty, it's crispy, it's smokey. But expensive and you have to wait in line...

I recently visited Goldies Smashburger, a popular spot for delicious smashburgers in Berlin. The burgers themselves were mouth-watering and well worth the visit, but unfortunately, there were some downsides to the experience. The staff did not speak English, which made it difficult to communicate our orders and ask any questions. Additionally, the seating was uncomfortable with no decent tables to sit at.
However, despite these drawbacks, the quality of the food made up for it. The ambiance was lively and bustling, with a great vibe and atmosphere. The service was efficient and quick, with our food being served in a timely manner. The burgers were cooked to perfection and had great flavor, definitely some of the best I’ve had in Berlin.
What sets Goldies Smashburger apart is their unique style of cooking burgers, resulting in juicy and flavorful burgers. However, the language barrier and uncomfortable seating detract from the overall experience.
For these reasons, I’m giving Goldies Smashburger 4 stars out of 5. While the language barrier and seating could be improved, the quality of the food and overall atmosphere make it a great spot for burger enthusiasts.
To improve the experience, I would suggest investing in comfortable seating and hiring staff who are proficient in English to improve communication with international customers. Despite these critiques, I am grateful for the delicious meal and would highly recommend Goldies Smashburger to anyone looking for a satisfying...
Read moreThe downside (or upside, if you're so cynically-inclined) of being an online sensation is the queues around the block and the long wait giving cause for crowds of people waiting and creating a very visible symbol of your overwhelming demand. We visited knowing full well that we were playing into it, and nonetheless the food delivered to the extent we'd go back.
End to end, our visit on a Sunday afternoon took an hour and a half. We waited in line patiently until we got to the front of the line and we're able to place our order on the screen. Then another forty minutes later our food was in hand.
The burgers are just exceptional. So crispy but so flavourful. The cheese and sauce is wonderous, and the big cheese dip adds another dimension.
The fries are fine. Personally, if I went back I'd skip them - the burger is the main event.
We'd go back for the burger alone, but be more tactical about when we came. Waiting in line for an hour and a half to eat a burger on the street is... extreme. And I suspect if you chose a quieter time, you'd enjoy the...
