Having been before and loved the tea and cakes I decided to meet some friends here to celebrate my birthday, however I walked out with my friends and went somewhere else.
Another reason that I chose to meet here is that the establishment advertises itself as hetero-friendly and along with 3 other gay men friends I had invited one heterosexual couple. Also important to note is that the establishment advertises itself as an LGBT+ safe space. For clarity the L stands for lesbian and the T for transgender.
I asked for a table for 5. The man asks "for 5 men?" Unfortunately, I answer yes already after her said 5 thinking he was repeating to confirm, before he said men.
I then corrected myself and said 1 woman. He looked around and said "you said 5 men" in a tone that to me sounded quite annoyed. I said "Sorry, I corrected myself" as we followed him through the cafe. Again sounding to me quite annoyed he showed us a space to sit.
I said, "if there is a problem we can leave". He said "well, it's only for men really here but you could sit here" in the same tone as before.
I said "with that attidute we'll just leave thanks".
As a gay man I was not willing to have my woman friend made to feel unwelcome and discriminated against in a supposedly welcoming establishment.
I was very upset with this interaction. I wanted to take my friends to a cafe that I recommend, where we could all feel welcome as advertised and as a group of 3 gay men, 1 straight man and one straight woman.
I felt particularly bad that I had led my woman friend into a situation where she would face discrimination due to her gender.
The way in which I was spoken to felt to me very hostile, rude and unwelcoming.
If they wish to be a man only establishment then they need to advertise as such, remove the L (and quite possibly the T) from LGBT+ on their website and remove the information that they are hetero friendly if they do not want to allow a straight couple in even when visiting with a group of gay friends.
It is my experience that this establishment is discriminatory and advertises themselves falsely and gave me and my friends a very bad experince on...
Read moreAvoid this place at all cost, I was humilated at this place this morning around 11:45 am 23.7.18. I was shooed away rudely by the older waitier wearing all black, I just asked "table for 1 please." and replied loudly.. FULL FULL and waiving his hand to shoo me.. all my life travelling in many countries this is I can say the rudest thing happened to me, my tone was not even telling... its asking for a table. I dont know why he said Full when there are tables outside available and inside which I think can seat up to 15 people only have 4 to 5 people sitting. Im completly shocked coz everyone looked at me as if Im a beggar asking for food, there is one more lady and 1 young man who works there just looked at me and I can see in their eyes that what the older guy did is wrong.. so I politely told the lady to redeem my self atleast is... "thats a very wrong thing to do coz there are lots of seats, and she just nod to me and looked at the available seats. I walked out of the resto very humilated. I think I was 1. Profiled.. Im just wearing walking shorts and shirt, thought he thinks i cant pay the bill.. or 2. Racism.. I am Asian and everyone sitting there that time was white. There is no other reason for this.I attached pic of the resto... showing that there are a lot of seats available. I suggest go to Raststätte just couple of steps across the road cross Martin Luther streetand they are in the corber where you will be serve politely and fair as we all deserve as a paying customer and they do this with a smile..plus the food is delicious and not...

One of the standout features of this cafe is its warm and welcoming atmosphere. It's the kind of place where you instantly feel at ease, making it a perfect spot to unwind. The friendly staff contributes to this ambiance, providing excellent service that enhances the overall experience.
Now, let's talk about the food. Café Kalwil certainly doesn't disappoint in this department. The menu offers a variety of delicious options, and I can personally vouch for the delectable cakes, especially the chocolate cake—it's truly a slice of heaven for dessert enthusiast
I also appreciated the vintage ambiance of the cafe, which adds a unique touch to your visit. It's a haven for those seeking a cozy and charming environment.
Keep in mind that there is a small outdoor seating area if you prefer some fresh air, although it's not very spacious. Payment by card is accepted, offering convenience, and reservations are preferable to secure your spot in this popular cafe.
In conclusion, Café Kalwil is a hidden gem in Berlin's Schöneberg district. If you're in search of a delightful cafe experience with scrumptious food, friendly service, and a cozy atmosphere, this is the place to be. It's a charming spot that I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone exploring the city. Enjoy your breakfast, your lunch or...
