tourists' trap - the waiter came up to tell my friend in a very typical German way "you'd better put your water bottle away" despite that we ordered more than one Apfelschorle for each person in our group. Ok - i understand my friend should not take our own water bottle out, but she didn't do it to save on spending on their drinks. Later when we wanted to pay the bill, we were literally yelled to by another waiter/owner in German language because we changed our mind from paying cash to paying with cards. It is the very authentic German customer service - which is zero. Costomer-service aside, foods were mediocre. My one (according to the waiter this dish was his "favourite") had too much sauce and the dish wasn't warm. The Thuringian sausages for kids were poorly over fried. Apfelschorle had too much sparkling water and too little apple juice. They Only have a menu written in German on a blackboard hung high above... Yes the waiter offered to read it out to us in English, but it left us little choice to think about. In all, I am absolutely astonished they rank so high on Tripadvisor - If Only tourists enjoy being treated in an authenticly awful German way. I can Only...
Read moreWe had the most wonderful experience dining at Hackethals for dinner tonight. The father and son team who served us were lovely and welcoming. The atmosphere is very authentic and cosy. The menu is only in German and seems to change frequently, however we were made to feel very comfortable and helped with what to order by the son who spoke English perfectly. I had a goose leg with cabbage and potato dumpling. Everything was flavourful and wonderfully cooked. The in house dark lager beer was so yum! I would go back just for the beer. We also shared the apple strudel which was very nice. Everything about our experience at Hackethals was perfect - the service, the food, the beer, the atmosphere. I love that it's on a quiet street away from any main area, truely feels like a real German restaurant experience - from the perspective of a tourist. Portions are large. Very convenient to public transport, only a few minutes walk from a station. I managed to book via email and on a Tuesday night the restaurant was full so probably worth booking ahead. If you get a chance to eat here on a visit to Berlin, do it! Thank...
Read moreLived in Berlin 25 years ago and visited with my wife who wanted to experience authentic German gastronomy. So I asked one of my friends for recommendations and we praise him every night so far. But today, on our last evening he outdid himself. A very cosy place run by Nils and Frank Hackenthal who have an easy to navigate menu with the most traditional, authentic german dishes you can find: Bratwurst, Spaetzle, Eisbein, Rinderrouladen, Cordon Bleu. Doesn't get more German than that. Add the most refreshing beer we tried in our life and great desert and you'll have a night to remember. What made the evening even more pleasant were the Hackenthal boys: We didn't speak with Frank, but his art spoke for him, a superb chef who is also remarkably swift, and Nils. Nils took his time to explain the menu, gave us great advice, and thankfully insisted we tried two shots on the house at the end (I never drink shots, but boy oh boy was I happy he convinced me with his charming and honest smile). Nils you are wonderful, and thank you Frank for a great meal, you both have set a...
