When I came across this in Berlin, I did not know what it was, so I just clicked a picture because I somehow knew it was something very important. I later read it up on the Internet about it. This is the flucht tunnel or escape tunnel. After the second world war, Berlin was divided into east and west Berlin and the notorious Berlin wall separate both parts. This escape tunnel was dug under the Berlin wall and was used by east berliners to escape into the western side. On January 24, 1962, twenty-eight Berliners succeeded in escaping from East to West through a twenty-seven-meter-long tunnel that they built themselves. The spectacular escape under the Wall was followed by other similar attempts. I stood in the exact place where once the Berlin wall stood, I had just walked into a history textbook. After I read this on Internet, I went there again the next day to have a closer look. You must visit this when you are in Berlin. It's the wall memorial at the bernaustrasse in Berlin to experience history. #berlinwall #tunnel #berlingram #travelberlin #travelgermany🇩🇪

The Berlin Wall Memorial, also known as Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer in German, is a historical site in Berlin, Germany, dedicated to preserving the memory of the Berlin Wall and the events surrounding it. Here are some key points about the Berlin Wall Memorial: 1. Location:The Berlin Wall Memorial is located in the center of Berlin, near the historic district of Mitte. It spans an area along Bernauer Strasse (Bernauer Street), which was divided by the Berlin Wall during the Cold War. 2. History:Bernauer Strasse became a symbol of the division of Berlin during the Cold War. The street was divided, with buildings on one side in East Berlin and those on the other side in West Berlin. The Wall ran along this street, and it was a site of dramatic escape attempts and tragic events. 3. Visitor Center: The memorial features a visitor center that provides detailed information about the history of the Berlin Wall, its construction, its impact on the city and its residents, and the stories of those who lived along Bernauer Strasse. 4. Documentation Center: The Documentation Center houses exhibitions, photographs, and documents that offer insights into the history of the Wall. It helps visitors understand the political and social context of the Cold War and the division of Berlin. 5. Remnants of the Wall: The memorial preserves a section of the original Berlin Wall, allowing visitors to see the wall's concrete segments and the "death strip" that included watchtowers and barriers. 6. Watchtower:A reconstructed watchtower provides a view of the former "no man's land" between the inner and outer walls of the Berlin Wall, highlighting the challenging conditions faced by those attempting to escape. 7. Chapel of Reconciliation:Located within the memorial, this modern chapel stands on the site of a former church that was demolished due to its proximity to the Wall. The chapel serves as a place for reflection and remembrance. 8. Outdoor Exhibition: The outdoor area of the memorial features exhibitions, memorials, and markers that tell the stories of individuals who were affected by the Wall, as well as the efforts to overcome it. The Berlin Wall Memorial serves as a place of historical education, reflection, and commemoration. It honors the memory of those who suffered as a result of the Wall and celebrates the peaceful reunification of Germany in 1989. It's an essential site for anyone interested in understanding the history of Berlin during the Cold War era.
