I've been visiting La Maison every 4-5 months since it opened, checking in out of curiosity more than real enjoyment. At the beginning it was a very cozy space with very slow service, now, as it branched out, even long lines move pretty quickly (coffee itself, however, takes a moment to manifest). Coffee and baked goods are made with great quality ingredients and high level of mastery. However, I do find it a little over hyped... The coffee is tasty, but it needs to be few degrees hotter - it should survive the time length a person needs to enjoy a croissant with it. For the baked goods, they are masterfully made and taste good. But for me personally, they are almost non indulge-able. Like a gorgeous lover with a very cold heart - something is just missing, it is borderline boring. As for the breads and baguettes, they are all great the first 6 hours but seem to wilt into chewy and hard okay-ness (although that is probably the curse of all great quality breads as there are no preservatives, hopefully?..). On the other news - this morning I bought an almond croissant and while it was decadently creamy and sweet, it has no flavor balance which is the rule no.1 of good cooking. It just needs a fairy sprinkle of salt to turn it from icky-syrupy-sweet to masterpiece. Maybe this is even a compliment, La Maison - it's just too perfect. And it just doesn't really tickle me with great amounts of pleasure that seems to be promised at the...
Read moreAs a vegan I am quite disappointed in the evolution of vegan options. It went from having the most incredible vegan deserts - the date cookie was divine, the pistachio cake was out of this world and the hazelnut tartlet was the reason I came- now they scrapped all of these marvelous things from the menu. What is next? The olive tapenade sandwich? You would not dare!! And now they have new deserts like cranberry white chocolate cookie (average at best) apricot crumble danish (so dry and boring) Gugelhuph (don’t even get me started) I don’t know whose idea it was to change the vegan options but this person needs to get fired. My friends and I reminisce about the days this place had best vegan items on the menu. Now we cannot find anything to eat here. When I come now I just get coffee and bread but cannot stop thinking about the good old days of the date cookie. Hope they hear my prayers and bring back the amazing...
Read moreI am a frequent customer of the Maison. I really enjoy the quality of the products and the atmosphere. But last Friday, I went there and at the table next to me there were some guys smoking marijuana. I kindly asked them if they could stop because all the smoke was blowing in my face, but they refused, saying it was allowed.
I went to speak with a girl at the counter, and she told me that it is indeed allowed to smoke marijuana inside the place.
Honestly, it would be good if this issue could be regulated. I don’t care what people do, but I don’t think it’s right for someone to smoke directly next to another person who doesn’t want marijuana smoke in their face. People could be more considerate and go to the canal side or somewhere else.
It was honestly a very uncomfortable experience, especially because the staff member did nothing, simply telling me that smoking marijuana inside the venue...
