Overhyped, overcrowded and understaffed, yet excellent tea and eye pleasing deco.
Upon entering we found out immediately that this place has probably been featured in numerous guides and lists, because the place was totally packed at an early hour and seems that reservation is essential - a typical feature of modern Berlin that we loathe.
There was only one waitress helping about 50-60 people, so obviously that was a disaster. Unfortunately she was also a bit like a robot, with no empathy or social skills - just repeating the exact same words to everyone. Confusion also came from the fact that she asked to remove shoes, but we were actually seated at a "normal table" not the floor seating side, and the floor was an ice cold stone floor - fortunately I was able to retrieve my shoes back.
Food was served before the tea, which is very strange, as one would expect tea to arrive first, and it's not really possible to start eating before you have your tea in front of you. I noticed confusion and disappointment about the same issue from the couple sitting next to us who had to wait quite a while with their food in front of them before the tea arrived.
As for the tea, we had the Russian tea ceremony set, and the Russian black tea was excellent - as good as I've had in many authentic Russian places, so no complaints there. One star from this review comes from the excellent tea. We also loved the fact that the Russian tea set came with a shot of Vodka, even though it was just a tiny one (2cl) and not of the best quality. It nevertheless gave a nice touch to the overall set.
The food on the other hand was nothing to write home about. The pierogi that we had were decent, but completely mediocre, the cookies that came with the Russian tea ceremony were also mostly bland and served more as eye candy than eating delight. The couple next to us also didn't seem too impressed with the taste of their Vareniki dumplings and pilov - from the language they spoke we came to the conclusion that these people were Russian so were probably comparing the tastes to the originals from their homeland.
The deco of the place is fantastic and definitely creates a strong mood. If it just weren't so over popular and the service so substandard, the place could have a really strong atmosphere and it would be a lovely place to spend time in. Currently however it is a mediocre experience at best.
One star for the tea, one star for the deco, and half star each for food and the nice touch of adding vodka to...
Read morePLEASE DON'T GO HERE... We were very excited to see this tearoom. Online we have seen many nice pictures and reviews about the place. We did the reservation online and got very quick response. The tearoom is very nice and cozy. Unfortunately we had a horrible experience here. We had a table for two and asked for a bigger table if possible, because the table we had was small and on the aisle which was not sitting very comfortable.
The waiter told us that all the tables were booked and we were just with two of us, so it was not possible to get a bigger table. Later on a couple came in and they got a bigger table. So we asked again for a bigger table (there were many empty tables with reservation who were 20 minutes late). We had the most rude answer and treatment ever. It was a German waiter (I am sorry for this) she told us not to ask any questions anymore, because otherwise something will happen. We didn't understand the reaction and felt very uncomfortable. A evening which suppose to be relaxed ended up in feeling horrible. Later on we heard that it is possible to sit on a bigger table, but we have to share it with other guests. We didn't had any problem with this, but this information was never given before. There was a clear form of racism here at this tearoom. As a muslim/hijabi I wouldn't recommend anyone to go here. I recommend you to go any other cafe where waiters speak English and have some manners how to treat a guest. Some waiters here are very rude and far from respectful. They missing the basic rules about how to treat a guest.
UPDATE The tearoom react on my message. All I can say is bravo, even in the comment you can see the disrespectful behavior to a customer. I am letterly in shock about the way a tearoom owner speaks about her/his customer. We were neither rude, neither disrespectful to the waiters or other customers. We had our drink, stayed less then 1 hour and left after finishing our drinks and paying. Even when we were leaving we said thank you to the waiter. As a customer I am emberassed to see an...
Read moreTERRIBLE ATTITUDE- NEVER GO BACK THERE! I’ve never had such a terrible experience in my life. I arrived at the restaurant first and informed them that two of my friends would join me shortly. When they arrived, there was no one at the reception, so I told them I was already inside and asked them to come in. We wanted to move to another table and tried to ask for permission, but no one paid attention to us. We seated ourselves, and then a waiter came over, questioning how my friends entered the restaurant. I politely explained the situation, but she refused to listen and kept a sour expression the entire time. Her attitude was rude and completely unprofessional. Another waiter, who was aware of the situation, remained silent and didn’t intervene. In the end, we were practically kicked out of the restaurant (she told us to leave very rudely). I will never consider going back to a place that treats customers like this. Terrible attitude and zero service! ( If you read the comment written below this, you will understand how rude they are. Their way of speaking is not nice at all. And they are not telling the truth about the...
