Volkskammer — Restaurant in Berlin

We stumbled, on our European trip, across this restaurant by accident, and were wowed by the fact that on the sign was DDR which apparently doesn’t mean “Deutsche Demokratische Republik” but “Das Design Restaurant“ we laughed at the pun and walked in.

Design it is! Designed to resemble the DDR era, complete with the DDR coat of arms on the menu! And all kinds of decor from that period of time. The ambiance was what I imagined it would have been like back then.

And then there is the food! OMG! The food is also from the DDR era, what a treat! I ordered a pork hock, which was excellent and the portion was really generous! The rest of the family was also pleasantly surprised at the generous portions, and how tasty everything was!

The staff was very friendly and accommodating . One of us speaks some residual German, so after the first greetings and being seated we were given menus in German, but when they noticed us struggling with the menu, and talking amongst ourselves in English, they came running with menus in English, we had no idea they had them in English too! My friend took me this Volkskammer with a brief explanation that it’s East Berlin food. Though the vibe screamed Communism. The decoration were interesting, especially with the two mannequins looking like they belong to the 70s. And of course, there was me being a tourist and trying to use google translate to know what I should order. The very helpful and friendly staff gave me an English menu, which I should have asked for sooner. It was lunch time and everything seems so full and hearty. The portion is insane! After a long time of consideration, I opted for German sausage and pasta. I love the fact that the tomato sauce tasted like ketchup and there’s a lot of it. German sausage is nice and I was able to finish the whole portion. With drinks, the meal came to about €35-40 which is so cheap. It’s not far from East side so very convenient. Terrible service and way of handling the wait. Didn't get to eat there in the end but not sure I would have wanted to seeing how I was treated. Told me to wait in the sofa next to entrance without any explaination or any estimated waiting time since apparently it was busy (saw many tables empty but maybe they were reserved. I can understand that). Came back with a menu for me to read meanwhile. And then I was completely forgotten for 15min until waitress shows up "did you order yet?" What do you mean? I AM NOT EVEN PROPERLY SEATED I was in the "waiting area" not even seated at a table I asked then : "Am I gonna eat there?" And she has the audacity to tell me "yes probably " I don't want to eat on the floor in the entrance area next to the toilet ma'am ?? If you couldn't accommodate me, let me know from the beginning.
