This hotel is brand new and has a fun vibe. The sign is a little hard to read, so you can let the taxi driver know it's on Stralauer Straße across the street from the Ostbahnhof
Rooms are large and well appointed for daily living. Mine had 2 bunk beds, two up top and two that were pushed together (which could serve as a double bed). The beds are comfortable, too. There are shelves, two cupboards and a clothes hanging area, which is plenty of space to store your stuff.
Everything is really clean. The staff are upbeat, friendly, and helpful.
There is a guest laundry (free detergent pods at the front desk) and guest kitchen, where you can make your own meals from whatever you buy at the two discount groceries (Rewe and Penny) at the Ostbahnhof across the street. (You can also find clothing at Kik, shoes at two different stores, a bookshop, an Apotheke (drug store that sells OTC medications), a hairdresser, and many different types of food to go shops.)
The breakfast is a good deal here, unlike some of the other places I stayed. There were eggs (hard boiled and scrambled), bread, rolls, croissants, jam and Nutella, 3 kinds of cheese and 2 kinds of cold cuts, yogurt and muesli (with fruits and nuts to mix in), fresh fruit and vegetables. About the only thing lacking was good coffee, I got spoiled with double espressos in Geneva and Paris. They did have an extensive tea selection that I didn't look into.
The Schulz is convenient to transit. You can get on the S- and U-bahns or hop a bus across the street at the Ostbahnhof to see whatever you're interested in. If you don't have a travel card, you can purchase a "Tageskarte" on the bus.
There is a small cafe, Cafe Martha, that sells snacks, desserts and drinks. You can sit in the seats nearby or go to the Schulz Arena. There are various couches, and you can also play ping pong and foosball. The bar is nice and low key.
The bathroom is really nice, with a great shower. My only quarrel is that the shower floor was extremely slippery. Hair and body gel is supplied, as well as a hair dryer. It was nice to be able to fix my hair in front of a mirror.
The rooms have lots of outlets, so you'll be able to charge your devices with no problem. About the only thing I could have asked for was an in-room safe.
I'd really like to go back to Berlin and stay at the Schulz longer. It's clean, comfortable, and has a great location so you can get...
Read moreThe hotel is well-located and convenient, with Ostbahnhof just across the road, and a nice view of the river, and the woman who checked us in was very friendly. The room was very nice and comfortable, except as we unpacked we noticed one of the duvets had a large blood stain on it. I took a photo of it and showed it to the guy at reception, who explained that as there was no housekeeping until tomorrow they would not be able to exchange it, but could move us to another room instead. As we had already unpacked everything and settled down to relax, we didn't want to pack up again to move. I made the point that if they could switch our rooms, could they not just switch our duvet with the one from the new room? They refused. So we slept with a blood-stained duvet. The next morning we hung the sign on our door for housekeeping, who were already in our hallway as we were leaving for the day. When we came back that evening they had not been in our room. So we slept a second night with a blood-stained duvet. On the third day thankfully they decided to clean our room and gave us a new duvet! The room itself had no facilities to make hot drinks, and no glasses for water, so you have to go down to the cafe every time you want a drink, which is presumably to make you spend money. I had high hopes for breakfast after reading the menu on their website, but it is pretty standard really. The woman working at the breakfast bar was unhappy that I asked for more soya milk rather than using the last dregs in the carton which is always curdled. The breakfast room is not very well laid out and it is not clear where to leave your used plates. On our last day, we arrived on the ground floor for breakfast at 10.30am only to find it closed. It was only by chance that we found out it had been moved to the 1st floor, otherwise we'd never have known as there was no signage. The bread buns were hard and impossible to slice, and one half of the toaster was broken. There are also no surfaces to put your plate down when you want to spread jam on your toast. Overall, this hotel has not been designed with the customer in mind, but is more concerned with style. However, with the location and view, and the nice rooms, I WOULD stay here again. I will just hope that these small issues are resolved by the next...
Read moreLove, love, love Schulz Hotel! I have stayed here several times upon my many visits to Berlin and I have to say it is one of my favorites and after staying elsewhere the last few times before my last visit, I have to say, I will have to choose Schulz always! The staff upon checking in was amazing, I didn't catch the gentleman's name that assisted me(sorry I need to get better at that), but his customer service was spectacular and he was so friendly and helpful with all the information he provided me. I have always found the rooms to be exceptionally clean, quiet and comfortable. The most recent stay I was in the small single room, but it was perfect. The food on site is okay, but you have plenty of options within a few minute's walks or train ride away. The location is prime as it is located adjacent to Ostbahnhof, which also has quick dining and grocery options. you have quick access to much of the city within minutes. Also, love that I can walk back from some of my favorite nearby nightlife options. My only negatives would be things that no one has control over like sometimes the price per night can skyrocket although some nights have great rates.. nature of the business I suppose, also lots of youth congregating sometimes- this is fairly common in my experience in European hotels and hostels as they are usually on school trips, but usually are respectful and courteous for the most part, but can be a bit noisy at times. Also, recently there were moments when arriving and leaving my room where there was a strong smell of marijuana in the hallway, but it usually dissipated between departure and return...again this is no fault of the hotel as I don't think it was done on the property, merely just lingered on another guest and their path. Overall great place to stay and highly recommended for your...
