Our present era is one in which nearly every cafe in a post-gentrified neighbourhood claims to serve specialty coffee.
Go ahead and walk into one at random. Beside the bottled maté you’ll find bags of coffee putting on two-dimensional display the graphic prowess of their roasters, where somewhere they’ve emblazoned the provenance, and altitude, of their beans.
With such a saturation, the labor to find a properly prepared cup is performed by the discerning drinker. The pre-ritual starts with scoping out shops, sometimes waiting in line and promptly leaving when noticing a poorly chosen milk provider, or errant move by a barista etching resentment into the machine. This damning observation causes a sudden fluster, requiring an exit to the next contender.
Let me save you time, and sudden exits from lesser establishments, by recommending Zacharias.
Sure, you know this is specialty coffee because their creaseless aprons echo the interior design, and they offer multiple late afternoon decaf options.
The specialty way to know that this is specialty coffee is that the barista, Taha, is so attentive that he rescues you from an awkward conversation on the patio where someone swears they have met you, and won’t let it go.
Taha saw my face exuding the strained expression of “even if we’ve met you’re not remarkable enough to have left an impression.”
He darted outside in a timely intervention and asked for my order. Then he corrected himself, remembering what I wanted from the last...

Read moreI took a day of solitude to read and spend some time alone, and Zacharias was where I chose to go. I was actually on my way to another shop but I saw the espresso machine, and figured I would try it. From my understanding, they aren't roasters, but they use different roasters from around the city. I can't remember which roaster was used, but I orderd the Yirga Cheffe cold brew and had a Zitronen creme croissant and I believe a marzipan croissant. I can confidently say that the croissants were the best croissants I've had in the city yet. I was delighted to sit out side of Zacharias and drink my cold brew with...
