Das Dorf, Hamburg: A Cozy Gem for German Classic
Nestled in the heart of St. Georg on Lange Reihe, Das Dorf is a charming, vaulted-ceiling basement restaurant that feels like a step back in time. Established in 1848, this Hamburg institution exudes rustic warmth with its candlelit ambiance, upholstered church benches, and tiled stoves, creating a cozy yet theatrical vibe perfect for a relaxed evening. The menu celebrates German and Austrian cuisine, with the Wiener Schnitzel—touted as the city’s best—stealing the show. Perfectly crispy and tender, served with golden fried potatoes, it’s a must-try at around €24. Other highlights include hearty beef roulades and fresh fish dishes like Zanderfilet, all crafted with regional, market-fresh ingredients.
The beer selection is impressive, featuring crisp German lagers and wheat beers, complemented by a curated list of regional wines. Service is friendly and attentive, though some note occasional delays during peak hours. With a 4.4/5 rating on Tripadvisor from nearly 1,000 reviews, Das Dorf’s popularity demands reservations, especially for its 65-75 seats. Tucked near the Deutsches Schauspielhaus, it’s ideal for pre-theater dining. Despite minor gripes about pricing (e.g., €7.80 for water), the authentic flavors and inviting atmosphere make Das Dorf a...

I was eating off-hours, so it was not a problem to get a table. If this was a prime meal time, I imagine I would not have been seated without a reservation. I was a bit underdressed, and I got "the look" as they seemed to evaluate how much they wanted me to eat there. As soon as I ordered my meal, staff became friendly. I get it. I look like I should be sitting by the lake, drinking Javer. Instead, I appreciate paired wines and curated menues. This meal was so good that every bite gave me chills. Amusingly, the distinguished couple that was placed at a table near mine didn't stop side-eyeing me until my meal arrived, I took a first bite, made a slightly too loud "mmmmmmm," closed my eyes and sat back in bliss. Fellow lovers of food and dining, as it turned out :) After dinner I got my Javer from a bodega and went back to sitting lakeside. Hamburg is an amazing city for food and this is a place that highlights...
Read moreA wonderful little restaurant tucked away in a basement on Lange Reihe in the St George district, Das Dorf serves a traditional German cuisine with a unique style.
They use fantastic ingredients and even brew their own Lager. While they boast Hamburgs best Schnitzel, be aware that there is only one on the menu, it is a fantastic dish, but if you are expecting a selection be warned. The food menu is limited but there is a good range. That aside the Das Dorf pilsner is really good, alongside that they serve Duckstein Dunkel and a Weiss beer. Plenty of starting plates to choose from and they cover most dietary needs.
We had some wonderful service, very friendly, quick and personable.
Great setting, comfortable, warm atmosphere with plenty of pictures to catch your eyes adorning the walls. Despite being fully booked and very busy to start at 21.00 It emptied very quickly and we were left alone around 22.00.
Thanks for a very pleasant...
