Lard, beef tongue, and blood sausage! Those were my first dishes, along with the marinated Limburger cheese. The beef tongue krokettes and sausage (blutwurst) are both very savory dishes - the krokettes without the saltiness, and the blutwurst without the sweetness that the apple in the description would lead me to expect. Worth a try, although I think my favorite here is the crispy lard spread, which you get when you order it along with butter and cream cheese for the bread. It is SO good. It's a crime that I didn't have room to finish it. Panna Cotta for dessert is excellent, though I think it differs from the menu description. No regrets though!
My second time, I tried the specials menu: kasespatzle and bread soup. The cheese noodles are solid, but the winner this time was the soup! Crunchy bread, speck, and pears (which were a surprise!), it's so full of flavor and I would come back just for this ... and maybe a side of lard with more bread. :)
Excellent restaurant and wonderful service! Hope to be back again. Be sure to get reservations! I also love the decor. Wish they sold postcards or something with their animal designs. The rabbit and fox...
Read moreI had high hopes for this place but was very disappointed. We were greeted by a sign telling us that only cash payment was possible on that day. Which is unfortunate but okay, understandable.
I went through the trouble of making reservations in advance but when I mentioned we had reservations we were told it wasn't working and they didn't know about our reservations (I had a confirmation email). Luckily we got a table.
The menu felt very small compared to what I saw on the website or based on the pictures in Google maps. And after we finally ordered something we waited for 45 minutes to be told that the dishes we ordered (from the daily recommendation on the wall) were not available and would still take some time.
In the end we waited over an hour for our food which was good but the experience was just very bad and we barely got an apology for it. Not sure I'll stop by again. It's not as if the place was cheap to make up for this catastrophic service.
The place itself is very welcoming and...
Read moreCompared to the many traditional establishments in Nuremberg, this modern-style restaurant (in terms of its interior design, service, and menu) is truly a breath of fresh air. It still serves classic Franconian dishes, with top-notch flavors and preparation. The Schäufele boasts crispy skin and tender meat, paired with a traditionally rich gravy. The spinach Knödel was surprisingly impressive, and the Nuremberg sausages delivered that familiar, authentic taste.
The open kitchen offers a visual feast, letting guests watch the cooking process unfold. The drink menu also features beers from local craft breweries.
I’ve dined here several times on my own and also brought friends along — and each visit has earned rave reviews.
