I’m posting the review now but we were visiting Rothenburg in August. I’ve read this is among the best restaurants in Rothenburg and a lot of people recommend it and even if it was that good in the time of writing I can’t say that is the case now. We reserved a dinner for two a day before leaving as we wanted to save the best for last. We were greeted by the owner and were seated at our table. The inside of the place is very narrow and cramped. The ceiling is lower so someone taller should watch not to bump their head on things. The overall feel is like walking into a medieval pub. There is an older couple that serve every table that I guess are the owners of the place. They were kind but I think we had a lot of issues with communication. We ordered a platter of cold cuts and variety of cheese. I liked some cold cuts but the rest was ordinary. After finishing the starters we waited for our main course. Firstly, we waited for the main course for 20-30 min and after it arrived we only got one plate of food. The lady came and asked if we need two plates to share. We told her that we ordered a second dish, but she told us back that thats the only thing that was ordered. I tried to talk to her what I ordered before and order it again but she got really snappy telling me another thing. After a few tries I gave up and got a pork knuckle with dumplings- and it was not what I ordered. I switched plates with my husband so I could eat something. I don’t appreciate that the lady came every 10min to ask if everything was ok, i think that the mixup of the order got us all anxious and this was making it even worse. We finished our food and payed straight away just to get out. If I don’t pay any mind to the experience we had I would still give the food a solid 3 because the price of 110 + eur was far too much for food that tasted as regular pub food. The cold cuts were the only thing Ive enjoyed. And we ordered soup, cold cuts, selections of cheese, breaded pork with chanterelles, and the pork knuckle we got and a salad. Drinks too. So maybe it’s a cool place to sit and have a beer but it’s very expensive for such ordinary food. All in all it was an underwhelming experience and I felt a bit disappointed afterwards. Forgot to mention you pay with cash here.

Zur Hoell (To Hell) is located in one of the oldest poor houses in the historic Old Rothenburg, and there is no better atmosphere to experience the old town like here. The establishment is quirky, and filled with antiques from times bygone. It feels like a tavern, perhaps not from the medieval ages, but certainly a few hundred years ago. The food is excellently executed. We had the fresh spring vegetable soup, which was light and refreshing, invoking feelings of spring blooming in the valley surrounding the village. For mains, the seasonal asparagus is a must. Bavarian white asparagus, or spargel, is a traditionally springtime treat. Generous, daily picked stalks of asparagus were simply cooked then doused in a rich hollandaise. The accompanying sausages, schnitzel, and potatoes were well executed but the asparagus is the star in spring. Portions are generous. The wine selection is also well curated. The dry crisp Franconian whites pair well with the food. Service is excellent. The wait staff are professional and extremely kind. Reservations recommended. Would highly recommend for classic Bavarian cuisine in a historic tavern.

Zur Höll gets four stars for the high quality food and very good value of it. Just beware you can pay only in cash. The place is small and could feel too small for anyone not liking to be seated very close to strangers. While for others the space tightness may be a welcomed experience. I can bear it for a dinner or two. I didn't enjoy the old style chandelier hanging almost all the way down to the table, so much so that I couldn't spot my friend seating in front of me. The staff is very friendly and supportive. English is spoken without much trouble. The policy about cash payment will feel odd, but as long as I've know the place, it's been like that. Though I don't visit it often, so exception might happen. Be sure to ask about payment method options before seating at a table. Reaching that place is not difficult, mind you, you have to walk away from the city center. While there are parking areas around the restaurant, they are mostly packed so I recommend parking in the major town parking areas then take a stroll within town.

Arrived and asked for a table for one person. Firstly it looks like they wanted to put me by a small table with two people, already sitting there. But nothing happens. After a couple minutes I'm told to go and wait outside. Here I am told to wait for a group to leave a table. After they've left the table, I sit and wait for a waiter to bring me the menu. 5 minutes later he comes out with a menu, but at the same time I'm being asked to move to a table with 4 people that know each other, and they're in the middle of their food (He didn't even ask them to begin with. And the look in their faces wasn't very inviting when they heard the waiter.) The reason was, that a group of 5 people, that arrived after I did, wanted a table (I was placed, by the waiter, at a 6 person table). Now I really began to feel like a burden. I said "I would prefer not to move seat, since they're in the middle of their dinner. I'd feel uncomfortable with that." The waiter then tells the group of 5, that I want to sit alone, after I just told the group of 5, that it was okay if they wanted to sit at the same table as me - That I wouldn't mind. And they seemed okay with it. Now I really felt like I was more trouble to the restaurant than any other guest. I ended up leaving, saying "I'll find somewhere where they have a seat for one person without any trouble. Give the group the table. Have a good night.". Because of the way the situation was handled by the waiter I really felt like a burden! I would rather if I was told to come back later or another day, because they had a full house, than being moved around at tables, between...

I saw that it had a good score here so me and my wife decided to go to this restaurant. As we arrived there we saw that they only accept cash, I said ok we got cash so no problem although we have 2024 and people now use mainly cards. We got inside and we waited until our turn comes to sit on a table as it was full but I didn't mind. As I waited I went online here to see the menu and what would we order. The owner then came and gave us the menu which was like 7-8 pages with drinks and only 1 page with food in which the main dishes were not there and we were informed that we would get the disches spoken. That was a big dissapointment as I would like to taste specific disches which by the way they weren't available that day. Also the dishes were not exactly German as recipes and the prices of course were not on the menu. After some thought we ended up choosing a main dish and after talking with the owner he convinced us to try the pumpkin soup so we got 1 as well. The soup had smoked salmon in it, was nothing great but ok. The main dish had klos with red cabbage and a sause that was average in taste and for meat had goose which in general as a dish was nothing great but ok I guess, an average dish in total. The shock came afterwards with the bill that for these 3 dishes and 2 cokes was almost 75 euro. Extremely expensive for 3 average dishes. If all these were on the menu and we could see the prices we wouldn't have ordered anything. Paying almost 30 euro for such an average dish is crazy. The inside of the restaurant was nothing that great as well to justify...
