I recently spent three nights with my wife at the Altfrankische Weinstube in Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber. ||The proprietor Mario was a pleasure to work with. He met us at the hotel when we arrived late in the day. Our check in was seamless.||I chose a larger room on the first floor (2nd floor for us Americans) and was not disappointed. We had a large room with a large bathroom. Nicely appointed and keeping with the eclectic nature of the décor of the hotel, it was interesting to say the least!. But in an enjoyable way. ||Breakfast is European style; meats, cheeses, yogurt, muesli, breads, juices, coffee, tea, scrambled eggs (which was a surprise) plus fresh fruits, some sweet rolls etc. ||Our waitress Barbara was very pleasant, very professional and very polite and cordial. She brought coffee and tea each morning that she served us. || We did have dinner one night and it was delicious. Ample portions and very nicely prepared food. I had the Pork tender loin with mushroom cream gravy, served with home made noodles. Very good and very filling. ||Mario and Barbara were great and treated us very well. However, there were two other staff who could use a lesson in interpersonal relations. One was a waitress and one was an evening hostess. After dinner we sat with some of the locals for English night. This was after we ate and left the hotel and then came back to socialize. I ordered a coffee and my wife had a soft drink. Not even thinking, I got up to go to our room and was walking towards the stairs and the hostess yelled “what about the coffee”? I forgot but I assumed that it would be added to my room. I asked if it could just be added to my room and she said no I had to pay then!! OK I get it but she acted as if I was running out of the hotel with state secrets tucked in my jacket. The other waitress that night was cleaning some tables. I sat at one to talk with the locals and she very abruptly ordered me to move. Not a request, not a polite “would you mind moving over there because I need to clean this table” even though it was already cleaned. Her directive was “you need to move”. Mario was not present during this or in the morning when we checked out or I would have spoken to him directly.||Mario will make arrangements for you to park your car just up the street form the hotel in a garage for a very reasonable fee. Very convenient. ||I would not have mentioned this if it was ne person who acted this way. I would have considered it an isolated incident. But 2 people in the same night. Maybe they feed off of each other. But quite the contrast to Mario and Barbara. This is why the hotel gets a 4 instead of a 5.||Overall , we enjoyed out stay. Other than the two-waitstaff it was a good experience. I would stay there again. The food was excellent, the room great and the location was very convenient. Mario has a nice establishment that is in an...

Read moreDecided to spend Christmas in Germany again this year and chose Rothenburg as the place. After careful review, we chose the Altfrankische Weinstube because of it's great reviews and it's medieval vibe. We were not disappointed. We decided to hike in from the train station and it took us about 20 minutes but also gave us a good feel for the town. The hotel was everything I expected. The room was a good size with comfortable beds, good blankets, good heating, a bathtub and a bathroom heater - were on the second floor. Breakfast was fabulous. Eggs, yogurt, fresh pastries, muesli, good coffee, meat and cheese plate and wonderful kitchen staff. Our rooms were cleaned everyday while we ate breakfast. The hotel staff were very knowledgeable about the town and things to do. The hotel is conveniently located to the Christmas Markets, the protection walls and the vistas surrounding the town. The Rothenburg Museum is out the front door and to the right - about 20 meters. If you want the medieval feel in a medieval town, this is the place. Some folks might prefer modern, but I wanted authentic for Rothenburg. The restaurant was packed all of the nights we stayed there, indicating the dinner food is excellent however our practice is to sample other local cuisine when in any new town. I hope I have hit most of the highlights. Great hotel, great breakfast, great room and great service. Who could...
