I ate here after a long 31 hours of traveling. It was a good decision. I ordered the original wienerschnitzel (served with cranberries and potato salad), and a green salad, along with a radler. I found the schnitzel to be properly seasoned - not too salty but not bland, and excellently paired with the cranberries. I normally don’t like fruit and meat combinations but this works well. Green salad was fresh. The potato salad has a vinegar/mustsrd base which I found delicious. I’ve been to German restaurants in America - owned and run with real Germans, but I’ve found them to serve bland schnitzel and they sweeten their potato salad too much. Maybe they are trying to cater to American “tastes” with the sweetness perhaps, or they are from another region of Germany that does that. Also I’ve had some with caraway in it, which is not my preference. Being “Pennsylvania German” incorrectly AKA as “Pennsylvania Dutch”, my Swiss-German roots tend to lean to this style of potato salad, and it was similar in flavor profile to what I grew up eating. Service was relatively quick too. After a long travel day, plus 14 years of not being in Germany and not speaking much German, I was a little embarrassed that I couldn’t quite muster up the language as well as I was hoping. The waitress knew English so at least I didn’t need to butcher the language more than I already had. Anyway, I’d definitely go back to this...
After the renovation and reopening I am positively surprised by the food. Very tasty dishes. I've been there several times and so far almost everything has been convincing (unfortunately, the place doesn't come close to grandma's quality). Particularly noteworthy is the deliciously refreshing potato salad. High-quality ingredients such as veal escalope are also on the menu, so a whole range of options can be scored. The interior now consists of modern elements paired with an old inn. The conversion was successful. Only the wooden benches I don't find so nice to stay longer. Hardly any padding. After a few months, the service has also stabilized and now, I think, knows the table numbers - food and drinks now arrive at the right tables quickly. Due to the location on the market and the quality of the food, I find the price-performance ratio reasonable. I will...
Read moreWould we be back again? A very big YES. The Stiefel original beer is fantastic. I will definitely like to test it again.
Food was good but not great. I ordered a soup meat dish which was slightly bland even though the portion was really generous. When eating the meat, out of the soup, it felt dry. Nearly 10 mins after finishing the dish I was given fried potatoes with a sauce. And hey presto. I realised that the sauce and potatoes supposed to be eaten with the meat and that would have made the dish Nearly perfect. I'm disappointed that was not the case. The Snitzel my partner had...
