Alter Kranen Restaurant and Beer garden — Restaurant in Würzburg

Kranke alte Menschen kriegen den einzige Platz an der Sonne beim 31 Grad Hitze - oder wie man bayerische Gastfreundschaft in Alter Kranen Würzburg definiert. Now in english, just to make sure it's clear: travelling from southern Bavaria for a checkup to Würzburg Uniklinik with my 80 year old mom who has gone through life saving heart operation just a year ago in the Uniklinik (which Würzburg can only be proud of!) and for some reason thought the Alter Kranen will be the perfect place to have lunch after the checkup. We were wrong. The waiter showed us the only table which was not in the shade out of at least 20 empty tables. When i told him i have an 80 year old heart patient with me whose circulation cannot tolerate the heat and would prefer a table in the shade, he told us with an asian accent that all tables are reserved (noting that the remark of asian accent is by no means sign of racism, it is only serving the purpose of identification). It must have been an extremely difficult task to move the reserved sign from one table to another and give us a more suitable table, instead he said we can sit inside (where it's even more hot). So we moved on a bit further along the Main to Sonnenstrasse 1 to Mediterraneo restaurant where the waiter with a strong italian accent kindly asked us where we would like to sit, and then seated us there (noting that the remark italian accent is by no means serving the purpose of identification, as all waiters have italian accent there). So in the end we learned that all 3 sorts of soups are excellent in the Mediterraneo restaurant, slightly favoring the tomato soup which was really excellent and salad, spaghetti napolitana, tortellini and pizza are also as good as they can be in a real italian restaurant. 2 types of fresh warm home made bread rolls as courtesy of the house on each table. Even the Warsteiner was at the right temperature. Suitable for all purses, we ended up with a 68 EURO bill for the 3 of us with a takeaway salad for a small dinner in our hotel. Wir haben doch den bayerische Gastfreundschaft beim italianer in Würzburg erlebt. Danke! No. We will not try to have lunch at the Alter Kranen before we leave Würzburg tomorrow. No chance. We will also not recommend it to anyone who has an elderly person in the company. As a matter of fact, i think we will not recommend it at all. Go there at...

Ich kann das Restaurant leider nicht mehr empfehlen.

Ich habe bis vor einigen Jahren in Würzburg studiert, und war in dieser Zeit öfter Mal im alten Kranen essen und es war immer sehr lecker, schnell und der Service super freundlich. Das scheint nun wohl nicht mehr der Fall zu sein.

Vor zwei Wochen waren wir nach Jahren Mal wieder zum Abendessen dort. Und im Nachhinein hätten wir direkt wieder gehen sollen...

Wir hatten einen Tisch reserviert und wurden zu Beginn erstmal gute 10 Minuten ignoriert, bevor wir überhaupt begrüßt wurden. Wäre es besonders voll gewesen hätten wir dafür auch volles Verständnis gehabt, dem war allerdings nicht so und der Herr der uns letztendlich an den Tisch brachte stand die komplette Zeit am Eingang und führte ein wohl sehr unterhaltsames Privatgespräch am Telefon. (Wir dachten eigentlich er sei ein Gast).

Bei der Reservierung wird man darauf hingewiesen, dass man nur 1,5-2 Stunden Zeit hat, das hat man uns dann auch vor Ort noch einmal gesagt. Kein Problem, da wir ohnehin noch einen Termin hatten.

Es fühlte sich jedoch alles sehr nach Massenabfertigung an. Keine 2 Minuten nachdem wir an den Tisch gebracht wurden kam der Kellner und wollte unsere Getränke und Essensbestellung. Getränke und Appetizer wurden umgehend gebracht, grundsätzlich natürlich eher gut als schlecht, wenn wir danach nicht für 50 Minuten ignoriert worden wären und dementsprechend fast eine Stunde auf unser Essen hätten warten müssen. Während wir auf unser Essen warteten kamen, aßen und bezahlten die beiden Tische neben uns... Ein anderer Tisch wurde darauf hingewiesen, dass ihre Zeit vorbei sei und sie gerne die nächsten Leute an den Tisch setzten würden. Zudem stehen die Tische sehr dicht aneinander und man fühlt sich schnell eingeengt.

Das Essen ist gut, vor allem das Schäufele ist sehr lecker. Obatzda ist in Ordnung, das Brot schmeckte allerdings nicht sehr frisch. Alles in allem hat die Qualität scheinbar etwas nachgelassen und dafür sind die Preise zu hoch.

Das Restaurant punktet ganz klar mit seiner Location, es scheint jedoch leider als würde man sich zu sehr darauf stützen und dafür die frische und Qualität des Essens und den Service schleifen lassen.

Wir sparen uns in Zukunft die Anfahrt und gehen woanders hin.

Für jeden, der bei schönem Wetter allerdings eh schon in der Stadt unterwegs ist und einen Ort sucht um ein Bier zu trinken, für den ist der alte Kranen aber bestimmt ein...

Traditional Bavarian restaurant and bier garden. I like their dishes and the portions are very big. I visited this place 3 years ago and then again a couple of weeks ago, and was positively surprised that more vegetarian options were added. Our vegetarian friend could have a proper meal there (sometimes in traditional German restaurants the only veg dish is fries and salad), he enjoyed it! The overall atmosphere is nice, and the location is superb. The only thing is that it took a good 30 minutes for our dishes to arrive (it was very busy Friday evening). I would recommend booking if you want to sit inside the restaurant, especially for dinner on Friday...
