Würzburg Old Main Bridge is a meeting place for young and old. It's tradition to meet at the bridge and have some wine and onion cake.... and the cake was actually pretty good 👍 Old Main Bridge was rebuilt 1473–1543 to replace the destroyed Romanesque bridge dated from 1133. The main reason for tourists and locals to visit the bridge is the 'Brückenschoppen' which means to enjoy a glass of local Franken wine. And because of this tradition, the bridge is also known as Wine Bridge of Würzburg! Wine pries range from. 10€ to 5.50€. The tables set up on the bridge in front of the wine restaurant are for table service and waiters will come to serve you. There is a small premium for that. Otherwise you line up and get it yourself. There is a 5€ glass deposit. You get it back when you return the glasses. You are not allowed to set the glass on the railing (like I did in the photo) or you get in trouble lol. Just get told not to do it 😊 I would say, this is another must see/must visit place/city in Germany!!!! Easy to get to once in Würzburg. You can't miss it. We did a walking tour of the city and the guide brought us here. Really not far to walk anywhere downtown. We visited in Beginning of October 2023. Just before the students came back to school... in about a week there were approximately 34,000 students coming...
Read moreThis is the 185 metre stone arch bridge that crosses the River Main in the historic centre of Wurzburg. It was constructed in the 15th century, replacing an earlier 11th century stone bridge. Twelve Baroque style statues of saints and other important historic figures were erected on the bridge pillars during the 18th century. What was left of these were all replaced with replicas after WWII as part of city wide reconstruction efforts.
The Old Main Bridge is easy and convenient to visit as it connects both sides of the river where visitors enjoy sightseeing opportunities in the city. Another popular activity is to enjoy a glass of wine at the eastern end of the bridge. The Gasthaus Alte Mainmühle (wine bar) has a window from which you can order glasses red & white, which you can enjoy along the bridge while taking in the river views, cityscapes, photograph spots and good environs. During Christmas Market season you will also find them selling...
Read moreI have been to this bridge twice now and both times were highly enjoyable for three main reasons:
The bridge has a lot of historic significance. It was completed in the 16th century and includes statues of key figures relevant to Würzburg's history. Unfortunately, large parts of it were destroyed in WWII and it had to be rebuilt; however, don't let this deter you from visiting - the beauty of the bridge and its medieval nature are well-replicated and preserved.
You will see an amazing view of the Fortress Marienburg. Photo included.
You can buy local wine, as well as mixed wine drinks, on the bridge. On summer afternoons, you will see many people enjoying a glass of wine in the sunshine while taking in the view. Granted, you can buy the wine for cheaper prices elsewhere, but even here the prices are not unreasonable - and the experience...
