Weinstuben Juliusspital — Restaurant in Würzburg

A last-minute decision to eat in Würzburg and catch a later train back home was more than justified by our choice of restaurant.

An atmospheric building, with dark wooden beams and furniture with glimpses of modernity (chrome beer taps, and fridges packed with local wine) make for an inviting restaurant.

Location and decor can only go part way towards good review though. The quality of the food is the ultimate test and I can tell you that, the schnitzel, at the very least is top notch.

Many places in Bavaria and Germany as a whole sell a decent schnitzel but eating here makes one appreciate it a really well cooked and presented dish.

Everyone in our seven-strong party enjoyed their food. The beer and wine was well received after a day doing all the touristy things Würzburg has to offer too.

Not too busy when we ate at 6.30ish but there were few tables free when we left 90 minutes later. I would suggest booking.

The waiter deserves a mentions too. Happy to help us with our basic German but quick to switch to English when we words failed us. Top service and I can easily recommend...

We were greeted by a waiter and I explained we had no reservation, he rolled his eyes and said you can have the table beside the door until 8 p.m. That gave us 1 1/2 hours. It was quiet at that point so our drinks, food ( fish and snitzel) arrived quickly. Food was good with no complaints. Tried to order another wine and a dessert, waited 20 minutes to get the waiters attention and another 20 for the dessert to arrive! He grunted at us several times, saying the restaurant was very busy as if it was our fault. After 1 3/4 hours we finally left (8.15). I nearly always tip but not on this occasion as the service was abysmal, much to the disgust of our waiter who slammed the bill on our table in a hissy fit. Good food, shit service....

Bei meinem Eintreffen zum Mittagessen am letzten Februarsonntag wurde ich sehr freundlich empfangen und zu meinem reservierten Platz begleitet. Auch während meines gesamten Aufenthalts zeigte sich die Kellnerin sehr aufmerksam und zuvorkommend, so dass ich mich stets gut versorgt und wohl gefühlt habe.

Die Auswahl an offenen Weinen und Speisen ist vollkommen ausreichend. Die Preise für das Essen sind für eine innerstädtische Traditionsgaststätte nicht zu beanstanden und die für den Schoppenwein sensationell günstig.

Ich habe mir ein typisches Sonntagsmenü zusammengestellt: als Vorspeise die Pfannkuchensuppe, zum Hauptgang das Fränkische Hochzeitsessen und als Dessert die Tonkabohnen Créme Brûlèe, insgesamt für sehr faire 32,70 €. Richtig gute, solide und handwerklich fehlerfrei zubereitete Gerichte der klassischen Wirtshausküche, sehr gut und kräftig abgeschmeckt. Okay, die Nachspeise gehört vielleicht (noch) nicht zu den Wirtshausklassikern, präsentierte sich aber auch sehr genussvoll. Ich war jedenfalls äußerst zufrieden mit meiner Auswahl und würde mir das genauso jederzeit wieder bestellen.

Auch wenn ich nicht alle probiert habe, gehe ich davon aus, dass sämtliche Weine im Juliusspital von hoher Qualität und wohlschmeckend sind. Jedenfalls wurde ich noch nie enttäuscht und auch diesmal war ich mit dem 2019er Rödelseer Küchenmeister Silvaner (7,90 € für 0,25L) und dem 2019er Würzburger Bacchus (5,90 € für 0,25L) sehr zufrieden. Schön, dass es hier noch echte Schoppen gibt, die so wenig kosten. Hierzulande ist ja die Unart weit verbreitet, zum Dessert eine Tasse Kaffee zu trinken. Ich würde das nicht tun und empfehle anstatt dessen als Begleiter zur Nachspeise die 2018er Juliusspital Rieslaner Auslese (9,50 € für 0,1L). Die liegt natürlich preislich etwas höher, ist aber jeden Cent wert.

Den Caffè habe ich zum Finale als Espresso, begleitet von dem Urfränkischen Birnenbrand genossen.

Das war ein sehr gelungener Abschluss meines Wochenendausflugs nach Würzburg und ich konnte wohlgenährt und zufrieden die Rückfahrt mit dem Zug am nahegelegenen Bahnhof antreten.

Ich kann das Juliusspital guten Gewissens uneingeschränkt empfehlen und werde hier bestimmt wieder...
