TLDR: Arguably the best, unique sandwich shop in Ottawa. A family runned business in the nation's capital, they deliver a perfect arepa experience with the perfect menu and friendly service. They cater, deliver and always welcome walk-ins. A very rare 5 out of 5 stars based on our experience at this cute little restaurant. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hey family, Here’s my honest review of Gooneys Sandwichworks. I made the visit with my partner in May, 2022 and I wanted to share my personal experience with you below: Location: 1 star. Located in the Nation’s Capital, Gooney’s finds itself in Downtown Ottawa. When visiting the city you can find it along Laurier Ave W, which is a few minutes walk to the capitol buildings and main tourist attractions. A perfect spot should all the comfy government officials want to sneak in a quick lunch or some of the locals who live in the city. Staffing: 1 star. As this is a family runned business the staff is hired by the family so they share the same values. Staff is friendly, courteous and of course professional. They offer suggestions should you ask and are able to handle large lunch crowds with ease. Food: 1 star. The shining star of this business. The food is just simply incredible. They have all day breakfast and a very simple, affordable menu. I ordered the Reina Pepiada and it was perfect. Made fresh, and served within a few minutes. The owner and staff have absolutely nailed these sandwiches and the ingredients they use are fresh and delicious. Without going on and on about the food you just have to try it. Service: 1 star. It can be busy during the lunch rush. When we visited there were a few customers waiting for their orders but the staff handled the rush with ease. Tables are clean, washrooms are available and drinks are self-serve. If it’s a beautiful day you can even take your sandwich to go and head over to the parks close by. Wow factor: 1 star The food. Period. It’s just so goooooooood. If you’re planning a visit to Ottawa in the new year, I strongly recommend checking this restaurant out. I give this restaurant a rare 5 out of 5 stars. Until next time…

It's a modern-looking place at the corner of Kent and Albert in downtown Ottawa that apparently just moved from a smaller space down on Laurier, and it has a loyal lunch clientele. I joined the line one Thursday afternoon and it was pretty full with people both dining in and taking out. They serve a selection of arepas, as well as sandwiches and bowls. An arepa is basically a South American sandwich. To quote wikipedia, "arepa is a type of food made of ground maize dough stuffed with a filling, eaten in northern parts of South America since pre-Columbian times, and notable primarily in the cuisine of Colombia and Venezuela, but also present in Bolivia, Ecuador, Nicaragua, and Panama." While it was a busy place, they run an efficient operation that puts the sandwich artists at Subway to shame and I quickly had my sammy in hand, paid, and found a table. After careful pre-scouting of the menu, as I usually do, I landed on the "sweet Isabella" which said menu describes as as arepas with "Roasted Pork, Coleslaw, Cheddar Cheese & our house coriander sauce." I also got a side Caesar salad, as I wasn't sure the arepas was enough to satisfy my hunger. To dispense first with the salad. The dividing line between a good Caesar and a mediocre Caesar often comes down to the dressing. This dressing was creamy and garlicky. It was a good Caesar. Now, the arepas. The pork was plentiful, not dry, and had tasty char. The sauce was good, and not all the arepas had slaw but this one did and I choose it because I wanted that second note to complement the meat. It did and it was good. My only note would be the cheese shread. It would have really elevated the sandwich were it melted. Overall, a good lunch, will be back.

Gooney’s Sandwich Works offers an outstanding vegetarian sandwich that truly impressed me. Despite the photos looking a bit messy, the taste and quality of the sandwich were excellent. The combination of fresh roasted mushrooms, cheddar cheese, and other wholesome ingredients made it not only delicious but also very healthy. This sandwich stands out as a great option for anyone looking for a nutritious and satisfying meal. The freshness of the ingredients is evident in every bite, and the flavors are well balanced, making it a memorable vegetarian choice. I appreciate that Gooney’s focuses on quality and health, which is reflected in their menu options. The sandwich was filling without feeling heavy, which is perfect for a light yet nourishing lunch. I will definitely be ordering from Gooney’s again because the food quality exceeded my expectations. The friendly service and the variety of options, including vegetarian and gluten-free choices, make it a versatile spot for different dietary needs. I also recommend this place to others who want a tasty, healthy sandwich experience. Overall, Gooney’s Sandwich Works delivers on taste, health, and value. Their vegetarian sandwich is a standout item that I will happily return for and suggest to friends and family. If you’re looking for a fresh, flavorful, and wholesome sandwich, Gooney’s is my top choice in Ottawa. The combination of great ingredients and care in preparation makes it a must-try for anyone who enjoys good food that’s also good for you.

My review is strictly for the arepa, specifically the pabellon arepa. This is not a traditional style with traditional ingredients, fusion at best. Feta cheese instead of using queso blanco is a fusion move? The first couple bites of plantains in my arepa I can see and taste that they were unripe plantains which could be another fusion thing to go more savory then sweet. But squeezed into the bottom of the arepa were 2 chunks (not sliced) plantains that were completely inedible. I brought it to the attention of one of the staff, she said it was probably not their best ones. Then my thought is, don't serve it at all! If you're going to serve subpar quality, I rather be told there are no plantains today. The only saving grace of the arepa was the shredded beef which was really tasty and a generous portion.

My first time trying arepas and they were sooo delicious. They may look small but the first thing I noticed when I picked mine up was how heavy it was. Definitely was satisfying and all of their arepas are less than $12 which is amazing value for money. The ingredients were all super fresh tasting and flavourful and don’t get me started on their special sauce, it was incredible! Nice to have a bottle on every table so I could add more! The interior is really nice, spacious and clean plus all the staff were great. Only thing is maybe I was eating it wrong, but I wish the ingredients were more evenly distributed as at the end of my arepa, I was just eating the beef. Still amazing though and definitely want to make this place a lunch staple!

A great restaurant offering an excellent quality arepa for a reasonable price. Order: Llanera Arepa ($10.00 each) x1 - Plenty of juicy beef inside - The avocado and tomato were great but there wasn't enough of them - The bun was a bit dry and I'd recommend adding extra sauce Vegetarian Arepa ($9.00 each) x1 - The filling was made up of mostly beans - The sauce and feta complimented the beans well and added more flavor - The greens were lacking in the arepa Atmosphere and Site: - A few tables inside with a cozy atmosphere - The outside of the restaurant doesn't grab your attention, making it so that it could be missed as you walk by Service: - The staff were friendly and able to explain the menu items - The food came out quickly
