Ταβέρνα τα ''βαρέλια" — Restaurant in Kavala Municipality

Taverna ta "Varelia" is a lovely little restaurant right in the center of Kavala. The tables are set along the street, and the vibrant atmosphere is made even better with live music — mostly classic Greek songs — which really adds to the charm. Occasionally, guests get up to dance, bringing even more life and joy to the setting.

If you’re in no rush and want to enjoy your meal slowly while soaking in the music, this place is perfect. The service is a bit slow, but it’s worth the wait — every dish arrives fresh, as if it just came off the stove. The stuffed vine leaves (sarmale) were a highlight — absolutely delicious and perfectly made. The jumbo shrimp looked amazing and came in a generous portion, though peeling them was a bit of a hassle for me.

I wouldn’t recommend the calamari, unfortunately — it was the only letdown, clearly frozen and too oily. However, the fried zucchini and fried cheese were both excellent.

For two people, we shared several meze dishes and enjoyed a bottle of ouzo, all for €41 — a very fair price considering the food, music, and overall ambiance. Worst experience ever. We had to wait 45 minutes to just order water and refreshments. Under staffed and the remaining staff are just lazy to work. There was a woman waitress who didnt even want to walk and passed us by 4 times without even trying to get our order. Dont go there if you value your time. The owner was just sitting, drinking and smoking a pack of cigarettes and not even remotely trying to...

I could even give it 6 stars. The food was gorgeous, but please find that boy a colleague - the waiter served at the whole place all alone! And although he was alone, he always came to us asking if we need something or if things are OK. That was the first from 5 restaurants in Kavala where we received proper service...
