Taverna ta "Varelia" is a lovely little restaurant right in the center of Kavala. The tables are set along the street, and the vibrant atmosphere is made even better with live music — mostly classic Greek songs — which really adds to the charm. Occasionally, guests get up to dance, bringing even more life and joy to the setting.
If you’re in no rush and want to enjoy your meal slowly while soaking in the music, this place is perfect. The service is a bit slow, but it’s worth the wait — every dish arrives fresh, as if it just came off the stove. The stuffed vine leaves (sarmale) were a highlight — absolutely delicious and perfectly made. The jumbo shrimp looked amazing and came in a generous portion, though peeling them was a bit of a hassle for me.
I wouldn’t recommend the calamari, unfortunately — it was the only letdown, clearly frozen and too oily. However, the fried zucchini and fried cheese were both excellent.
For two people, we shared several meze dishes and enjoyed a bottle of ouzo, all for €41 — a very fair price considering the food, music, and overall ambiance.
