What a great evening we had at this very traditional Greek Taverna, despite the heavy rain.
We'd booked for 19h30 which was fortunate as only the tables with weather shielding were available for use. Booking is advisable in any case as the restaurant is very popular.
Once seated and Ouzos poured, Costas and Alex were keen to invite us inside to look at the daily specials, prepared in addition to the menu options.
The specials all looked delicious and we found it hard to choose, however what follows and photographed are the dishes we opted for.
To start, we shared the cheese-stuffed red pepper which was delicious, The cheeses we a melange including Kefalatori, a strong, hard Greek cheese, similar to Parmesan. The dish was topped with truffle oil and quite rich, so sharing was a good option as we planned three courses.
For our main courses my wife opted for oven cooked chicken with lemon and tarragon, served with oven cooked potatoes. I opted for the slow cooked pork knuckle served on a bed of rice, with a white wine and honey sauce. Both dishes were great. Frankly I've never tasted such succulent, flavourful and tender pork, it fell off the bone with almost no encouragement. Portions were more than ample. We both opted for Retsina as a traditional Taverna beverage, though this may not be to everyone's taste.
For dessert, we shared a home made cheesecake, with a biscuit crumb base, covered with Mascarpone and cream and topped with jam. Again, plenty for a sharing portion and delicious.
To finish of we both a had a generous Metaxa and Greek coffee. We also received a complementary Greek Halva and another Ouzo, presented with the bill.
We've already reserved the same table for tomorrow evening, our last night in Greece, this trip.
We are regular visitors to the Greek Islands and this truly was among the best traditional meals we've had. The whole dining experience was great, despite the inclement weather. Other diners were festive and clearly having as good a time as us. We chatted with a delightful Bulgarian family of 8 with a (soggy) English sheep dog, on their second visit to the restaurant. Also a British table of 4 friends who were also having a super evening.
Do visit this restaurant and do please experience the special dishes, you won't be...
Read moreAte here last night with a couple of friends. We have one level 5 and one level 4 (soon to be 5 as well) local guide in our group, so its only natural for us to let google review decide our dining destination. First of all, as seen from the picture, this is not near our home, its full 12 hour trip. But we made it, driven by our passion for lamb meat which was soon shattered by our waiter's suggestion not to take it, because it is insufficient in size to suit our needs. Not to be denied, we took lamb chops x3 anyway, on top of some serious portioned food. Food came after 35-40 painful minutes, not so much cause we were starving at that point, but because our friend kept whining and being negative towards service and restaurant in general throughout whole thing just because she was jelaous waiter had cooler tattoos than her. After that we all started enjoying the food which was ok, but nothing more. We ended up paying 130€ (around 22 per person), and on top of that i promiced my friend i'd pay for her future tattoos to help her look cool as the above mentioned waiter, so this definitely was not cheap. Anyway, would recommend if you are: a) hipster hero lvl 99 who loves small pricey portions that look good on instagram b) unable for any reason to walk 15 more meters and buy any default giros c) someone who has cool tattoos and wont be...
Read moreWe were recommended to go here by our 'land lady' in Nikiana (we hadn't even known it features in the tourist maps as the oldest taverna in Lefkas - more on that later). It's in a side street before you reach the marina, and you would think you're miles away from the hustle and bustle. There's a standard menu, however you're also invited into the kitchen to see what has been cooked that day - this is much more authentic Lefkada fare. Each option we ordered was delicious - the portions are large, so we hadn't really needed the scrummy starters 😀 (homemade hummus etc) The front of house staff were particularly friendly, polite and knowledgeable. Back to my comment earlier - while we were there an elderly couple came in ecstatic that they'd found it; turns out the gentleman used to frequent 50 years ago when he lived on the island! and knew the original owner/cook - who happens to be the grandmother of the current owner/manager/cook; it was so heartwarming to hear. On a side note the facilities are...
