A Greek Tragedy
So, you most certainly have heard of turist traps. This one is the teacher of all the others.
We arrived from Athens on a tour-package to Meteora, and at the end station in Kalambaka, a meal was planned before heading onto to the monastaries. When we entered the so-called "taverna", the place looked sad- like a school cantine in the 80's. We had very little time, approximately 30 mins to feed the bus, and were aware that fine-dining and ala carte was off the books. Still, it does not excuse probably our worst ever meal well over the price we payed back in Athens in the tourist area.
We ordered the greek salad, moussaka and the greek lasagna. The meat dishes would be perfect for the taverna to have prepared for travelers like us.
The salad was decent, no complaints there. However, the greek lasagna had to be more than a day old. The pasta was drier than the Sahara Desert, and the meat and sauce flavorless, when I think again- I don't think there was even a sauce!
The moussaka was stone cold and drowning in oil, even so the taste was horrendous (not even one of the traditional spices could be tasted!). This seemed to be happening to the rest of the clients around the table as several plates went BACK to reheat, and the customer closest to us had literal ICE in the center of her moussaka! When we were asked if we enjoyed our food (since full plates didn't gave that answer up), we were honest and told them exactly what we wrote here. The answer was that this is how greeks cook, what an insult to greek cuisine that we enjoyed so much in our stay in Greece!
This would've been more forgivable if this was an unplanned visit of over 50 people ordering random stuff from the menu. But they knew ahead of time that we were coming, and presented these dishes along with one or two more options for groups.
Not only was the food dreadful, the price equaled it. 50€ for two adults and a teenager! After this experience, we played it safe and ate burgers at another place in town. This trap seems to be agreed between the event company in Kalambaka for the Meteora tours, and the taverna, as we were guided like sheep into the place with our palates and wallets slaughtered! Do yourself a favor: walk 300 meters up the street and eat...
Read moreWe had lunch here on our 1 day tour from Athens to Meteora. It was part of the package so we didn’t expect much but we were wrong. The food was very good, starting with the Greek salad with generous portions of feta cheese and different options for lunch, out of which we picked stuffed tomatoes, meatballs with tomato sauce, pork and chicken souvlakis. All were excellent. Highly recommend this restaurant if you’re in the area or...
Read moreCame here as part of a tour packaged lunch but hey the moussaka was pretty good, the beef with rice was very good, and nothing to complain about the Greek salad. Nothing that made us shout wow five stars, but nothing that made us not enjoy our lunch either. Above average, great place to have a meal. Staff were friendly and kind. Atmosphere is very casual for what you could expect...
