Don't let the positive reviews from non-Indians who are perhaps unaware about Indian cuisine fool you. I, being Indian, am well versed in Indian cuisine and I am not exaggerating in the slightest when I say that this is a disgrace to Indian cuisine. The restaurant is in a dark alley and is very much shady, 'abysmal' is an inadequate term to describe the taste and quality of the food. The Chicken Nihari is essentially chicken chunks in a watery ginger paste and the khameeri is being masqueraded as naan. The food is not freshly cooked, rather it is frozen food, it has been mentioned in the menu itself; 'Frozen.' The resturant is run by Bangladeshis and Pakistanis who are attempting to earn a buck using India's name. When questioned about the quality of the food, the owner revealed that he has altered the cuisine to cater to the Greek palate, and what an unpleasant alteration it is! However, I sternly believe that any person worth his or her salt, whether Greek, Indian or any other will find the whole experience revolting. When given feedback, the owner and waitress got very defensive and assumed we were insulting Pakistani cuisine, this was not our intention which we made clear but to no avail. The menus are designed with art of Shri Krishna to 'Indianize' the place but what they fail to understand is that that does not redeem them from the act of altering a culture's cuisine to cater to certain people ( in this case, people without taste buds I presume ). This is a great injustice to the nation and customers interested in it's cuisine. The owner mentioned that he has been running the restaurant for 21 years, but the experience definitely did not make this apparent. Eat at...
Read moreAn Indian restaurant downtown Thessaloniki. Although I lived there for four years, I only recently found that there was a restaurant hidden in a kind of yard. The place has nothing special as a decor. Really cheap furniture, and the music from youtube playing a remix list with "Budha" in the name, yet I am sure that although I have never been in India, this is not the music played in any restaurant in India, or in any original restaurant wherever in the world. The rating however goes to the food served. Really well cooked, really tasty and that was not only my idea. The food was spicy enough for the local tastes, yet when I asked for a more spicy sauce, there was no problem. I just had it served. To rap it up, a place not chic but with original tastes, a take away proposal at best, yet if downtown in a mood for Indian,...
Read moreThis is a hidden gem of Thessaloniki. Restaurant with authentic Indian food and a great atmosphere. The food is great and the staff is extremely polite and helpful. We got the naan bread with butter, rice and two chicken dishes one a little spicy (korma) and one more subtle (badami). They were both great and went well with the lasi mango and banana we drank. If you are in a mood for curry or want to try something different from the typical Greek cuisine, then you should definitely try Nargis. It may be a bit hard to find your way there as it is hidden among blocks of flats with just a tiny sign on Alexandrou Svolou street indicating where it is, but...
