Mastra — Restaurant in Municipality of Zografos

People: don't be fooled by the rating and pics. Not sure how such as place can have a 4+ average review rating. Was hooked by the Google reviews, so I booked table for 2 at 17.30 hrs for a surprise dinner with the missus who had a full-day conference. Restaurant was not busy - it was in the middle of the week, and the only other table occupied was by a group of 8 or so. We were told: no fish available except salmon 'cos it was a busy day (come on, this is Athens, and you call yourself a seafood restaurant!). Shrimp salad (6.50 or 7.50 EUR - can't remember exactly)....was surimi, whose imitation taste I absolutely abhor. Main course was so-so. Mastra is a friendly and authentic neighborhood restaurant in Athens, serving freshly prepared Greek staples. I came here for an early dinner during a recent conference and was seated in the relaxing outside area by the friendly owner, who I had some chats with. I ordered the eggplant croquettes as an appetizer and grilled fish as the main, with a side of fries/chips. The food was very good and especially the fish really convinced: it was tender, flavorful and conveniently pre-filleted, so that it was easier to eat. The chips were fried perfectly and came with a some nice herbs and spices that made them stand out. The portion sizes were generous and prices very fair. Lovely place for fish in the middle of Athens. Had no idea about this place but was brought here by a friend who lives close by and has been coming here for years. The fish was very fresh and top quality. We were advised as to what was freshest on the day and went with the options. Everything we had was very tasty and good excellently. The staff are very polite and friendly. The decor is not my cup of tea necessarily, but it works, and frankly, when you have good company and good food, who cares.
