Awful meal - had so looked forward to visiting Assos having read about it - it’s a stunning special village. Seeing as it’s hard to know where to eat - all are similar and few options, we walked by the beautiful setting of this restaurant wondering if there was a table for 2 (myself and my 17 year old son).
While we didn’t get the friendliest reception nor offered one of at least three available tables nearer the sea front - they said they were reserved but for the duration of our meal they remained empty.
I ordered the special of the day - red snapper grilled and when it came, it was very dry, so I told the gruff waiter who had shown us to the table, and he accused me of having ordered it ‘well done’.
I don’t believe I have ever (and I order this a lot) been asked how I like my white fish ie sea bream, sea bass etc cooked (tuna, steak, lamb fine) …… so he tried to blame it on me and when I disagreed that I had said ‘very well done’ (which is what he claimed I had), he became rude and aggressive asking me what I wanted him to do about it. I told him I didn’t know and he glaringly said, ‘well you can choose something else that will take at least 30 minutes or I take it away and you don’t pay for it’. I chose the latter as I couldn’t stand to remain there any longer than necessary.
The mezze starter was also pretty gross (inedible tarama and a garlic dip - tzatziki was just about ok) and my son’s tuna was overcooked.
Oddly, the table of 3 young Greek diners next to us had delicious and fresh looking food.
As a single woman - it is so clear when you’re being overlooked in restaurants - but his bad manners and arrogance as well as lying - well - it was just a horrible experience. It’s a shame as it could have been handled so differently. In fact, when I mentioned it was dry, I was genuinely curious if this was how it was meant to be as he had sold me on this dish…. (Oh and by the way it was €26 - so not Michelin prices but not cheap either)….
I have never written a bad review on Google so I do this to just let others know - namely possibly non native tourists - that despite the cosy exterior and lovely location - you might have a poor and overly priced meal with some pretty arrogant service to boot.
Other than that Asso is great - I just wish we had picked a friendlier, more genteel restaurant to enjoy the...
Read moreAh, Nefali in Assos... a true gem that stole our hearts! Perched perfectly to showcase the breathtaking Assos Castle atop the glimmering sea, every visit felt like stepping into a postcard. The view alone is worth the trip, offering a serene backdrop to truly unforgettable evenings.
The food? Oh my goodness, the food! Nefali serves up authentic Greek dishes that are simply bursting with flavor. You can taste the tradition and the quality in every single bite. From the freshest ingredients to recipes perfected over time, each plate was a delightful journey through the best of Greek cuisine. We pretty much went there every night as it was so good!
What truly sets Nefali apart, though, are the wonderful people who run it. The waiters were so thoughtful and attentive, always there when you needed them with a genuine smile. And Andreas, the owner, is the heart and soul of the place. His warm welcome and genuine care made us feel like cherished guests. He clearly pours his passion into Nefali, creating an atmosphere that's both inviting and special. Thank you so much for the hoka shoe tips too Andreas!
I mean this with absolute sincerity, that the restaurant provides more than just a meal, dining at Nefali was an incredibly relaxing and peaceful experience. The stunning views, combined with the gentle sounds of the sea and the wonderful service, created a truly zen atmosphere. It was the perfect escape.
Saying goodbye to the restaurant last night feels like leaving a little piece of paradise behind. We are currently sat in the airport wondering how we are ever going to cope without our nightly wine, fish soups and mousakaa.
If you're ever lucky enough to find yourself in Assos, please do yourself a favor and visit Nefali. It's an absolute treasure. Thank you so much and see you...

The service was the worst I've ever encountered. Never in all my life have I had an obnoxious waiter actually try to start a physical fight with me! This all derived from asking why we hadn't received a starter and one beer we had ordered. Probably due to a language barrier; beware.
That wasn't really a major issue but when the bearded waiter rolled his eyes to some staff and made a face I felt extremely offended after he had also blamed us for their mistakes. "You told us to bring it together" and "you didn't order a second beer", all of which we initially just casually ignored and didn't make sense as we had ordered two beers and my starter was brought before the main course. Confronting him about his behaviour though only made him behave even worse.
After a loud exchange, I've never been so incensed at a restaurant or café; ever, I had decided to just try and ignore him and eat my food so I could leave. Not to be. A woman, his sister I believe, came over and asked me what's wrong with me? Why am I an angry person? ... The worst experience of my holiday that has otherwise been absolutely fantastic. Love the places and peoples I have come across but this place I would give a wide berth.
The draft beer was nice on a hot, hot day. Spaghetti Bolognese was nice, kids had that. The pork Souvlaki was sadly very disappointing. I have fallen in love with this little street food and enjoy it a lot. Theirs was bone dry. Chips were too oily and the pita was burnt. I dare not complain about that though. We also had a seafood platter...
