1901 — Restaurant in Skiathos Municipality

Our last dinner in Skiathos at Restaurant 1901 turned into a nightmare. We ordered lamb chops with roasted potatoes and pesto, moussaka, and spaghetti with shrimp and clams. About two hours later, our 5-year-old son started vomiting and had severe stomach pain. Shortly after, the rest of the family (including myself, my husband, and our younger son) also got sick.

We were all down for 48 hours with symptoms of food poisoning, confirmed later by lab tests. We couldn’t keep down even water.

Thankfully, we’re both doctors and were able to administer injectable treatment at home — otherwise, hospitalization would have been necessary. We've visited Skiathos before and always eat at local restaurants, but this was the first time we’ve ever experienced something like this.

Would absolutely not recommend this place!!!

On the positive side, here are some restaurants we really enjoyed during our stay (with no issues whatsoever): Olive Thea, Kioupi, Pork 'n' Roll, Victoria, Oregano, Beach House, Bakaliko, Agrokalio, Souvlake, Folia, and the beach restaurant at Mandraki.

My response: I will not remove the review. Most probably, other people had the same symptoms, and you also asked them not to post or to delete the review? Our lab tests confirmed that the infection was with Stafilococus Aureus. Most probably one of your employees is a healthy carrier or he/she didn't wash properly the hands or something from what he have ordered was keept ar room temperature. Those types of infections that you referred to in your reply and have the onset after more than 24 hours have a completely different spectrum of symptoms. About the higyene...well, one of the waitresses picked the bread from our first basket and moved it to the second one that we ordered with bared hands after she touched money from the table near us..(money=a surface full of microorganisms)...most probably you consider this normal too?! As a meter of fact, we kindly ask her not to touch food after she works with money, but she smiled and continued to move the bread.

About the lab test. Check the law...

Buona taverna, anche se ce ne sono di migliori al centro di Skiathos. Non sono presenti in menu fritture di calamari, gamberi, o pesce, mentre la moussaka ordinata è arrivata quasi fredda, non riuscendo a gustarla al meglio. Acqua in bottiglia a 5€ è veramente eccessivo. Personale gentile e rapido.

ENGLISH Good taverna, although there are better ones in downtown Skiathos. No fried dishes like fried squid, shrimp, or fish are on the menu, while the moussaka arrived almost cold, failing to enjoy it at its best. Bottled water at 5€ is really excessive. Friendly and quick staff.

EDIT They are right, they pointed out to me that 1901 is not a taverna, but a Greek restaurant, so I’m sorry.

Anyway moussaka was almost cold (not “not hot”, but almost cold - and everywhere I eat in Greece it’s not at that temperature), and 5€ for a bottle of sparkling water is in any case too much (I’m open to understand why it should be normal to pay 5€ a bottle of simple sparkling water - as a 0.5l beer - in a greek restaurant).

I haven’t rated 1901 3 stars because is not a taverna, my review is based on the food experience I had, than you can be a taverna, a bar, a restaurant, a take away place, or whatever you want, but what count is the food experience, and mine was a 3 stars experience. Quite simply magical. I first ate here 20 years ago, most recently this evening and I would recommend 1901 to absolutely everyone. This restaurant captures a magical ingredient that mixes Greek hospitality with a professional and classy edge alongside a rustic vibe. It's perfect. It's my absolute favourite place to go when I visit Skiathos. This restaurant is situated on a cobbled street in the heart of Skiathos town. Most diners sit outside and I recommend to book ahead. We decided last minute to head to town and Leftedes was able to sit us inside but next to open shutters just oozing atmosphere. It doesn't feel rushed. It is relaxed. It is absolutely the best dining experience in Skiathos. The quality of the food is quite amazing, the staff work hard yet somehow pay attention to all your needs and the wine is grown by the owner on the mainland.
