The food was okay but the restaurant tried to charge us for things we did not order. Always doublecheck your bills when eating here!
We ordered one appetizer and two main courses. When our appetizer arrived it was accompanied by a basket of bread that we assumed was complementary given that we didn’t order any bread. However, since it came at the same time as our appetizer, we didn’t eat any of the bread.
When the bill came there was a strange charge we didn’t recognize, so we asked about it and were told that it was for bread. We pointed out that not only had we not ordered bread, we also hadn’t even ate any of it and didn’t want to pay for something we didn’t ask for.
The employee then began arguing and was very rude and belittling. He tried to make it out like this was how every restaurant in Greece worked and that we just didn’t understand local customs. However, this was the only restaurant we visited during our week long stay that tried this. If you check some of the other negative reviews here you will also find multiple locals complaining in Greek about the exact same thing so apparently it isn’t a local custom to do this. We ended up refusing to pay for the bread and eventually they relented.
There was no information anywhere in the menu that there was a charge for bread brought to the table. Bread was simply listed as an appetizer you could order similar to the other appetizer. This raises the question of if the restaurant could just bring any appetizer to the table and then charge for it even if the customer didn’t order that or want it.
To whoever is the restaurant owner: adding things to the bill without the customer consenting to it by ordering it is never acceptable! Be clear if there are any additional charges for something. This kind of behaviour is downright criminal and damages your reputation and sadly overshadowed the otherwise decent food and ruined the...
Read moreVisited spontaneously coming back through the town from a walk and decided to stop in for some lunch. Was first greeted by the loveliest waiter and an older gentleman who sat us down with the most perfect view of the old port. We have been to Skiathos before but have never come across a restaurant and menu that felt so authentic and homemade, with all the greek classics and some on display. Knowing that it was a family restaurant with recipes that had been passed down generations really gave the impression that we were in for a treat! We had the Kleftiko, Pork Souvlaki, Aubergine with cheese and tomato and gorgeous fries on the side. The prices for these meals were really reasonable and good value considering the location of the restaurant. This meal was so delicious that we booked a table for the following evening to have the Klefitiko again and try the Stifado. The flavour these meals all had were genuinely like nothing we had tasted before. When we payed for our meal the lovely waiter brought out some ice cream and a greek pudding that we hadn’t asked for which just made the meal even more memorable. The waiter was just so lovely and passionate about this restaurant it was so nice to see and be a part of, we will be going back again every time we come to Skiathos - It has to be one of our top recommendations for eating in...
Read more"O Batis" is a traditional Greek taverna near the end of the old port. Entrance is up some steps that climb up to Platkes promontory. So the terrace overlooks small boats moored below, and there is a partial view of the Bourtzi. See the first picture. Prices are very reasonable (I paid 16 euros) but the quality of the food is very average. It's OK, portions are moderate, nothing was exceptional. However my sardines were all filleted - saving a lot of fiddling about with bones. The plate was garnished with a dollop of herby mashed potato and some tomato slices, the mash was quite nice - but not as appealing as hand cut chips in my opinion. Service was friendly enough. Atmosphere isn't bad too, there is a bit of bustle with strollers below on the promenade, and walkers climbing up towards the nearby Platkes promontory or heading for the tiny beach there, even though the restaurant is halfway up the steps above the busier part of the port promenade. The fun hand painted mural is worth a look. Check your bill for possible errors. I overpaid 4 euros but...
