This was a very disappointing experience, which was largely due to poor communication from the manager. She really needs to brush up on her communication and hospitality skills.
First, I asked if I could have a table closer to the lovely view overlooking the sea, but she said all (yes, all!) of the twelve or so available tables were reserved within the timeframe. I looked around me and saw, surprise surprise (!), that the only other person left out on a limb was another solo diner. As usual, we are treated as second-class citizens. And I also observed during the course of my whole meal that the table next to me (closer to the sea) was unoccupied. Also, a couple came in who hadn't reserved and were offered a table nearer the sea, but were told they needed to leave by a certain time. I wish that option had been offered to me...
Second, there wasn't very much choice on the menu and what was offered was overpriced. I will admit that the crab tortelone was nice but a very small portion. And the setting itself is lovely.
Third - and this was what made my blood boil - I was sitting down drawing and reading after dinner, relaxing quite nicely actually, just after finishing my wine, and the manager came up to me and said: 'Madame, there's a reservation here, you need to pay.' I was flabbergasted at the rudeness, as well as the fact she hadn't told me this table was reserved at a certain time.
Then came melting point. The bill arrived and I saw that I had been charged for a bread basket. The basket was put on the table when I arrived, but as many people have said in the reviews here, we were NOT told this was going to be charged. This is completely wrong. I mentioned this fact to the male waiter and, seeing how upset I was about everything, he removed it from the bill. I also brought up the fact that I hadn't been told the table was reserved.
'But you can't just sit there with no food or drinks,' he said.
'What if I had wanted a dessert,' I replied (in fact, I had been planning on ordering one).
'Oh... thats a different story... but I don't think it's too big a deal.'
Oh boy did that last comment make my blood boil. So exhausted, I didn't say anything, but really dude, if you're paying a lot of money for an already overpriced meal with lacklustre hospitality, you sure as hell don't want someone saying that to you.
Look, I've worked in hospitality for years, and I know what hard work it is. It can be soul-destroying sometimes. And I'm not just being one of those horrible customers I used to hate. But my point here is that there was a complete lack of hospitality in this case. I mean, completely.
The male waiter at least correctly conceded in the end:
'This was a communication issue with management.'
Good on you for acknowledging this fact.
Do yourself a favour,...
Read moreThis was the best meal of our stay on Skiathos. All the menus in the various tavernas and restaurants are largely the same, this is one of the few places which stands out because of the quality and type of dishes on offer. It's a real step above. Additionally the location is superb, a beautiful view over the old port, and the service is good too. It's a smaller menu with some special but everything looked like it was done very well. I had the beef cheek, which was superb, even my picky daughter enjoyed her meal. Linguini Pomodoro made as well as I've seen it. Yes it's marginally more expensive than the tavernas but I still felt it was good value. I can't really say that for some of the tavernas charging up to 20 euros for a modest portion of Stifado...
