Asteria Taverna — Restaurant in Zakynthos Municipality

The place is lovely and the changes are lovely to the restaurant but the food is no where near as lovely as it used to be. It’s a new chef and they no longer do the lamb flambé or many other Greek dishes. Yes they have changed the menu to be different but from the picture I took the background meal was my husbands which was meant to be mousaka. It was bland and had no taste like it used to. I had sofrito which was supposed to be savoury rice and have a garlic and white wine sauce. If you can see I had no sauce to see or taste and it was boiled rice. It was not the best cut and not softly breaking up like you normally get. It is such a shame as only 4 traditional Greek mains too. We have been going there for nearly twenty years and have recommended it to so many people even over the last few days since being here but...

After walking past most nights we got chatting to the prop outside. He told us it’s the best food on the island, Well he would do wouldn’t he , Anyway we thought why not . Big mistake my good lady had the chicken souvlaki, I had Lamb Kelftico. Food was poor my lamb was Luke warm , The rice it came with was stodgy and reheated not good . My good ladies got just one small skewer a few chips and salad no sauces nothing. We asked to see the manager but they was more interested in serving a massive party of people must have been 40 on the table . So we put it down to that as there meals looked great . We had the best meal here that we have had since we got here. Quick and efficient service, friendly and welcoming staff who made every diner in this restaurant special. The owner is a delightful young lady called Denise who works alongside her staff waiting tables, I could not praise her more highly, she made my autistic granddaughter feel so special, our visit here has been the highlight of her visit to the island. The beef is supplied by her family and all the other meats are locally sourced and for the most part everything is prepared and cooked on the day using the freshest of produce, all of which combines to make the superb meal we had at a very reasonable price.
