Cheeky’s Deli — Restaurant in Budapest

They ran out of pastrami sandwiches by 5 PM. The place opened just 3 weeks ago and there is one guy who prepares all the orders, so even if a group of 3-4 people are in front of you, you may have to wait 15 minutes for your order.

Following the "American" way of tipping, the very uncomfortable question is given to you to select a tip before paying with card. I would have given the place 4 starts, but this knocked it down a star for me. At a joint where you walk up to give your order, to pay, and to retrieve your order it is not expected to tip. We are not in America (speaking as a local Hungarian here). Making this uncomfortable situation for people to tip you is for sure helping the bottom line but hurting the overall experience.

The food was nice, but a relatively small portion for the price point. The bread of the sandwich was lightly toasted, but could have used a little more crunch. Overall a good sandwich, but coupled with the long wait time and the uncomfortable tipping conversation that happens in front of other diners above the relatively high price for a sandwich, I am giving it a 3/5.

I admire the ambitious goal to recreate the iconic pastrami and reuben sandwiches made popular by the famous New York City staple Katz’s deli. One can see many videos on YouTube about the way Katz’s deli prepares their sandwiches and the soft and moist meats they prepare well in advance. However, while the sandwiches at Cheeky Deli are great, the meats aren’t comparable to the ones they attempt to imitate, and fall a bit short on it. The meat isn’t soft as it should be, and the fermented onions on the side that come with the sandwiches are a very small portion. At very little additional cost these portions could better match the size of the sandwiches. This deli dishes out American style Reubens, Pastrami and other sandwiches. The portions are pretty good!

I had the pastrami as well as the mac and cheese. Everything was delicious! I really liked how I was given a side of pickled onions and pickles too. It pairs with the sandwiches so much more nicely!

They have other deli meats available like steaks, for you to take home and cook. There are some interesting items on the beverage shelf such as barrel smoked cola.

For planning purposes, there is no toilet but there is a hand wash station since your hands will be covered in mustard and other sauces from these...
