I only found this wonderful pub serving Hungarian food by lucky circumstance while roaming the Pest district. If you visit, do note the sign is "Piroska Bar" - I must recommend!

Having just arrived in Budapest from a warmer city, I was caught in the 11 degree windy evening in just a T-shirt. I was already numb in the lips as I arrived at the bar.

The bar is located in a quiet street that's not touristy, and there were just 2 or 3 other tables seated when I arrived, though it was late. It's a nice retro themed bar, softly playing 80s rock and pop. Dimly but warmly lit - perfect for a mellow night out. I was welcomed in by an assuring waiter whose name I did not get.

For food, I was seeking Hungarian cuisine and went with a type of catfish paprika stew, served with noodly dumplings, and topped with a healthy serving of cottage cheese and sour cream. This was superfluously amazing - a very refreshing break from the smoky cured meats in other European cities. The catfish chunks were sauteed nicely, and the stew was similar to a lighter goulash, only spicier and slightly hotter (rather similar to a North Indian paneer!) To take it over the top, the cottage cheese is garnished with bits of what I detected as fried lard, which put a very nice caramel accent to the dish! It was rich and soulful and warmed me from the inside out. Though it's my first time in Budapest, I felt like I was returning home im a vague way.

Be prepared to wait a bit for the food, as everything is freshly prepared upon order. In the meantime, get a cold beer and enjoy the laid back vibes of the bar.

We arrived by 21:00 on a Monday. The info on maps said open until 23:00. After entering and asking for a table for 2 (in English) he said that the kitchen is closed already and we can only choose from three dishes (bean gulash, paprika chicken stew and the third I already forgot). We then ordered the stew. 45 minutes later, the food didn’t arrive, but locals who came into the pub were offered a table and they could order from the full menu. They also had their food before we had ours.

Another group of tourists (Asian) were not even able to ask for a table, since the staff directly told them that they’re closed while they were still walking in.

Food was not very intense by the taste (unlike I know Hungarian food) and it needed a ton of salt. The dumplings tasted way too much like vegetable broth and were slightly bitter.

Beer was okay (seems like the lines are cleaned well), but it was also not poured properly until the 0,5l marking.

All in all: As a tourist,...

Atmosphere: The ambiance of the restaurant beautifully reflects Hungarian culture, with rustic wooden furniture, traditional motifs, and warm lighting that creates a cozy and inviting environment. The folk music playing softly in the background adds to the authenticity. Service: The staff were friendly and attentive, providing helpful recommendations from the menu. They seemed knowledgeable about the dishes . Food: The menu offered a variety of classic Hungarian dishes, such as goulash, Each dish was well-prepared and flavorful, showcasing the rich spices and ingredients typical of Hungarian cuisine. The portions were generous, and the presentation was appealing. Overall Experience: The restaurant provided a delightful experience that felt both authentic and welcoming. It’s a great spot for anyone looking to explore Hungarian cuisine in a charming setting.

Piroska is a very interesting restaurant with good Hungarian food. The interior is furnished with 1950's and 60's memorabilia of Hungarian everyday life - TVs, posters, magazines, photo cameras... The furniture is a classic Hungarian restaurant of the past. But important thing is food. Food is very good, we've had chicken paprikash, beef stew and some soups. It was all very tasty and the portion sizes very enough for a grown man, so that means that women or kinds could not eat entire portion. On Sunday 2PM it was not too crowded. Both waiters were very very nice and spoke very good English. We did not wait too long for our food. When we come back and if we find ourselves near the City Park we are coming back.
