If you're craving for some delicious Chinese food in Reykjavik, then Shanghai is definitely worth a visit. As a Singaporean, I can attest to the authenticity of the food, and I was thoroughly impressed with the taste and quality of the dishes.
The portion sizes are generous and reasonably priced, making it a great option for those looking for a filling meal. The spicy tofu and curry chicken are both highly recommended, and they pair perfectly with a side of white rice. And of course, to complete the Chinese dining experience, don't forget to order a cup of hot tea.
But it's not just the food that makes Shanghai a great dining spot - the owner's warm and friendly demeanor is another reason to visit. She's welcoming, attentive, and ensures that every customer feels right at home.

Update 26/03/2023: I had such an amazing experience at Shanghai that I decided to return the very next day to try more dishes. And once again, I was blown away by the authenticity and deliciousness of the food.
The Singapore Fried Rice was a standout dish - it was packed with flavor and perfectly cooked. We enjoyed it so much that we ordered it twice! The Fried Eggplant with spicy sauce and garlic was another standout dish that left us craving for more.
As a Singaporean, I have to say that the food at Shanghai far exceeded some of my local hawker scenes. The flavors were spot on, and the dishes were cooked to perfection. I highly recommend anyone who is looking for truly authentic Chinese food to visit Shanghai.
The owner's warm hospitality and attentiveness to her customers only adds to the overall dining experience. It's clear that she takes pride in her food and goes above and beyond to ensure that her customers are happy and satisfied.

Read moreAs we stood outside, interested to see the menu, we were greeted by two gentlemen who offered us a menu. We were not pressurised to enter the restaurant but sat down anyway to escape the cold as both myself and my partner had been on an all day trip during the day and were starving. After ordering our meal I decided to look at the reviews and I was filled with worry as there were plenty of negative reviews which I later discovered I did not need to be concerned about. The food came and the crispy chicken was the best of the bunch. It was a mix of both thigh and breast, it also included a side of rice which was a great surprise. The chicken rice dish that we ordered was also filled with flavour, piled high and left nothing wanting. The pork spring rolls were also plentiful and were a perfect side that had much more meat than I was used to in a spring roll. The service was quick and the plates were cleared efficiently with the waiter making sure that no dirty plates were kept sat at the table for too long. They were not pushy and left us to eat our meal, asking us if we enjoyed it during and afterwards of which we certainly did. The negative reviews of Shanghai were certainly not warranted in my opinion, something which may put off prospective customers from eating here. The prices were also completely acceptable and reasonable considering the area and how Chinese food can often be on the expensive side.
On the whole it was pleasant, not the greatest Chinese food I have ever tasted but it certainly didn't taste like chemicals or reheated as other reviews have stated. The service was excellent and if you are looking for a reasonably priced meal to help keep you out from the cold then I certainly wouldn't shy away from...
Read moreWe couldn’t believe our luck when we spotted another Shanghai Chinese restaurant on Laugavegur (street) in Reykjavik. We were very eager to dine there. We showed up for lunch twice and figured out that it is only open for dinner. We went in for dinner around 6 pm and found decor very similar to the Shanghai Chinese restaurant in Akureyri. It seemed like it’s a sister restaurant or a chain. Even the menu was the same. The venue was decorated with beautiful red ceilings. It offered friendly service, reasonable prices, and delicious food.
We ordered:
5*Rice noodle soup w/lamb 冰岛羊肉米线: portion was generous with quite a few lamb chunks. The soup was full of flavor. It was authentic and absolutely delicious. I highly recommend it, especially cooked by the owner/hostess.
5*Yunnan pork w/pickled vegetables 云南酸腌荬&韭菜花炒猪肉: authentic local Chinese dish; went well with rice. The portion was big and the taste was great. It was so delicious and I forgot to take a picture. LOL.
4*Selection of heavenly wok fried vegetables炒时鲜蔬菜 Local fresh cabbage cooked with chili pepper to add flavor. Good and healthy and it wasn’t that spicy.
4*Broccoli w/ Chinese mushrooms香菇西兰花:we asked for less oil and salt. This was cooked perfectly as we requested without losing its taste.
4* Egg and seaweed soup 紫菜蛋花汤: light and healthy.
It was so special and delicious that we ate until we were stuffed. Needless to say, we had another hearty and satisfying meal. Highly recommend Shanghai Chinese chain restaurant to anyone who visits Iceland and craves for authentic and delicious Chinese food, especially Southwestern Yunnan...
