avoid at all costs I’m an avid traveller, I have been to many many countries and Iceland before! DO NOT STAY IN THIS HOTEL IF YOU HAVE ANY RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS! My brother was effectively poisoned from the sulphur smell (rotten egg smell) this lead to eye irritation, sickness, coughing, diarrhoea and phlegm! My brother was taken by ambulance to the hospital as soon as we got to the airport meaning we missed our flights! Staff did not even offer my brother bottled water, was told to drink from tap which absolutely stunk! Lisa the reception manager advised me and my brother this was perfectly normal for Iceland! This is untrue as I have stayed in Iceland previously and after missing our flights we stayed at the Marriott which did not small of sulphur!! Unfortunately my brother has learning difficulties, mental health, previous collapsed lungs, copd and has had major back surgery, we simply stayed two nights! Once my brother had been given fluids (dehydrated) and left the hotel he improved with 12hours and was able to fly home the next morning! Staff did not offer any medical support, I had to ask for sick bags, water (again given in a glass from tap) and ask where a pharmacy was! My brother slept under a window with the bathroom door shut, in the middle of Jan, even the linen smelt of it! Once he had a shower in the Marriott and was treated in hospital he was completely fine to fly home!! I am disgusted at his treatment and the outright lie that was told! Please note the hotels reception toilet does not smell whatsoever, we was on the 1st floor, rooms 114 and 116 which were turned into supposed duluxe rooms!! My brother missed his £361 snowmobile tour, £25.00 Aurora basecamp tour and the sky lagoon! The hospital cost me £900 taxis a further £80-100 and £294 for another nights stay! I dread to think that if this had been my 77yr old father who stayed in that room for a week what would have happened to them! Staff even laughed at my brother walking past when he was in complete crisis!! Absolutely vile and the worst hotel I have ever stayed in! Reception even argued with me over booking a return cab, telling me that two tents will have a reception and she almost didn’t want me to spend my own money! Even to the point that the couple who heard this little episode we met on the plane asked did we get our return cab in the end! Staff could have offered my brother food, water, late check out and offered medical! Instead they simply lied stating it was normal and ignored us sat in reception! I have advised easyJet and I will be contacting icelands environmental health equivalent! Please note hospital stated possible viral gastro however if this was the case both my son and I would have caught the exact same bug! I myself have 13 medical conditions and weakened immune system! We can evidence that once my brother had left that hotel and managed to shower he was completely and...
Read moreWe stayed here 3 nights on our way back to the USA. Nice walking distance into harbor and city highlights. Easy 3 minute walk to water's edge. The staff are amazing- I am not able to single anyone out because they ALL were. They book excursions, give advice chat to you about Iceland and make your stay very enjoyable. Check in time here is 4.00 pm, I arrived at the hotel at 11.30 am expecting just to leave my baggage at the hotel, but I was very impressed that my room was ready.
My room had an ocean view that was well worth the extra. I looked out the window for longer than I watched the television for the short time I spent in the room.
The room was on the basic side but was spotlesssly clean, very comfortable and more spacious than I had been led to believe by one or two comments on here. The breakfast, available from 7.00 am, was very good quality, plentiful and varied consisting of waffles you cook in the machine yourself, salads, fruit, skyr (yoghurt), cereals, bread, biscuits, croissants, pain du chocolate, sausages, omelette, a selection of herrings, cheese, coffee, tea, fruit juices. I never had lunch on my entire trip. I had to catch an early morning flight back home, and a plentiful continental breakfast was made avialable to me at 4.15 am, which I particularly appreciated.
I saw the outside of some other hotels when other people were dropped off from the Flybus before me and also during my travels in Reykjavik. In my own mind this hotel was in a better position than the Hilton, which is a long way from the harbour and town centre, and the Radisson which is very close to the harbour and the noisy nightlife. It also appeared to me to be a better quality hotel than others I saw from the outside.
There is free computer for the internet in the reception area which I used on 2 occasions for a very short time and I never saw anyone else using it. With regard to the smell of sulphur in the water; yes there is a slight but distinct smell of sulphur when the water is run. But it soon dissipates when the tap is turned off. You can drink the water, but I chose not to.
To summarise: if you want to stay at a decent hotel and not pay Hilton or Radisson prices, this hotel should be given maximum...
Read moreAll in all a lovely hotel, close (5 min or less walking distance) to wonderful bakeries, coffee shops, cafés, restaurants and great grocery shops/kiosks. Also very close to the main shopping street. The room was clean, there is a kettle and complimentary coffee/tea, 3 towels per person and wonderful storage possibilities, with a big wardrobe, a desk with a closet and drawers, a suitcase bench with anti slip liners and side tables with a storage room and a drawer. It was very silent between my room and the other room, which was nice, as I often feel like the walls in hotel rooms are not very soundproof - so no snoring or loudness coming through to my room :)
Unfortunately there were a few things, that could be better… As I have seen mentioned here and on other review pages multiple times before, my shower drain was absolutely not doing it’s job. Even a quick 2 minute rinse under the shower led to the whole bathroom floor being flooded with water. It was honestly very gross to have to walk around the bathroom trying to squeegee the water, that had turned cold and had been getting around touching the base of the toilet brush holder and god knows what.. It truly surprises me that this issue has not been fixed, as it is very very unpleasant and inconvenient, and has been mentioned (and been responded to by the hotel) multiple times. My head end on the bed was up against the wall, where the hotels elevator was on the other side. This was very tiring during the night and very early morning especially, as I kept waking up from the elevator going at all times. I had to go out to buy earplugs on the second day, because I got very little sleep the first night - not because of noise from people/outside, but solely because of the...
