Review: Venkatadri Vantillu - A Taste of Authentic Andhra Tiffins Venkatadri Vantillu, a long-standing establishment in Visakhapatnam, holds a special place in the hearts of locals and visitors alike seeking authentic South Indian tiffins. While it might not boast a lavish ambiance, its charm lies in its commitment to quality, consistent taste, and pocket-friendly pricing. The Food - The True Star: The undisputed highlight of Venkatadri Vantillu is its food. They specialize in traditional Andhra breakfast and snack items, often prepared with a generous hand of ghee, which adds to their rich flavor. Must-try dishes include: Sponge Dosa & Ghee Karam Dosa: These are consistently lauded as signature items, known for their unique preparation and deliciousness. The "Karam" (spicy paste) is a key differentiator from dosas found in other regions. Idli: Light, soft, and fluffy, the idlis here are a classic done right. Upma: Often praised for its perfect consistency and simple, comforting flavors. MLA Pesarattu: A popular green gram dosa, often recommended. Pongal: Another well-loved breakfast item. Portions are generally good, and the food feels fresh and homely. While some might find the chutneys and sambar different from what they're used to (especially if coming from other South Indian states), they are part of the local flavor profile. Ambiance & Service: Don't come expecting a fine-dining experience. Venkatadri Vantillu is a budget-friendly establishment with a basic, no-frills setup. It's often bustling, especially during peak hours, and can get crowded. However, the focus here is squarely on the food. Value for Money: This is where Venkatadri Vantillu truly shines. You can enjoy a satisfying and delicious meal without burning a hole in your pocket. Many items are priced very reasonably, making it an excellent option for daily breakfast or a quick, affordable bite.
Crowds: Be prepared for a wait, especially during peak breakfast and evening hours. Ambiance: It's a functional eatery, not a place for a leisurely, quiet meal. Parking: Parking can be a challenge as it's located on...

Read moreI was returning from Bheemili beach and decided to stop here for breakfast. The menu isn't lavish but has a variety including meals, bhajjis and more. Most items on the menu are priced under Rs 100 and hence Vnekatadri Vantillu is a pocket-friendly place. My order consisted of Idli Sambhar, Upma, Masala Dosa and their famous Ghee Karam Sponge Dosa. The total bill was less than 300 for 3 people which is extremely cheap.
Once inside, the setup is extremely basic. Run mostly by women, the place is well maintained. About 10-12 tables and that's it. The kitchen is open, so you can get a view of what's happening inside. Starting with the Upma - it was good. Perfect consistency, the way I like it. In Hyderabad, the upma is more watery but this was perfect.
Masala dosa was quite different from what we have here in Hyderabad. The karam chutney was missing - in Hyderabad, you'll find this red paste on every Masala dosa that you order. It was crisp, yet soft, reminded me somewhat of the dose from Bengaluru. Coming to the icon sponge dosa, it was a unique take on the set dosa. Two pieces of fluffy and airy set dosa sprinkled with karam podi (spiced powder) and topped with a generous amount of ghee. The podi wasn't spicy, rather it was flavourful. The mixture of podi with ghee elevated the taste. It's quite a unique preparation and having it for the first time, I'll surely recommend you to try it when you are in Vizag.
So plan your day such that you witness a gorgeous sunrise followed by breakfast at Venkatadri Vantillu. For a detailed review, check out my blog post on...
