Downtown Diner is an amazing new discovery in the heart of Residency road, just opposite Taj Vivanta, and is hard to miss from outside. As you step inside this wide space located above The DownTown pub, you will be surprised to find the very American diner vibes that hit you hard. Attention to detail involves heavy deep red and dark blue interiors that are vibrant not just in the furniture but also on the floor as well as on the walls. Immediately transported me to some of the diners in Seattle and most recently in the American Diner themed restaurants in Universal Studios, Singapore and Disneyland Paris. While I was hoping to view a menu that is heavily Americanised, strangely it was a mix that satiates the need for the local palate too. Settled down with an Irish coffee and a chicken 65. While the strong hit of Irish coffee cooled me down in this non-air conditioned space, the Chicken 65 surprised me with strong flavours of the chicken pakoda from the streets of Chennai. Served on a bed of masala (pori) puffed rice, this is something that I highly recommend, though it disagreed with the American diner concept. The egg chili was another pub favourite from Namma Ooru, beautifully created and incorporated in the menu.
The very british Fish n Chips found its way and was very thin and crispy and served with even crispier fries and a pea mash and mayo was a good version, but we could never figure out where the bread layer started and ended with a extremely thin, almost non-existent fish layer, left us disappointed in the end, not recommended. The margherita pizza was a good version, loaded cheese with a tiny hint of basil. When we requested if the vegetarian club sandwich present on the menu could be made in a non-vegetarian chicken version, the service staff consulted with the chef and happily obliged to present us one of the best versions that I have had in a very long time.
Extremely full, with just space for desserts, we ordered an Apple pie, Newyork to Mysuru Cheesecake, Hot Chocolate Fudge and a Chocolate Mocha fondant. While the apple pie stole the show with fantastic mildly sweet apples with a dose of cinnamon in a beautifully baked pie, served with a fantastic plain vanilla ice cream, it was divine and a very American Diner representation. The Newyork to Mysuru cheesecake had an introduction of a layer of mysore pak as the base, very mild, but a wonderful version to devour, though the berry compote on top was completely unnecessary. The chocolate mocha fondant delivered a stellar ooze, though it was more of chocolate and less of mocha. The hot chocolate fudge was a generous portion with a decent mix of brownies and ice cream. In the end we all craved for a coffee, more specifically an affogato, and I asked if they could actually serve us a bowl of ice cream in a coffee cup with a shot of espresso on the side. With my detailed instructions, they delivered a fantastic affogato, and their coffee game was fantastic proved without a doubt with their strong, flavourful bitter espresso. We loved it so much that we ordered one more. We were a large group and our needs were very well attended too, with the very quick and attentive service, with some out of the menu requests like the chicken club sandwich and an affogato duly delivered by the Chef, we were a more than a happy bunch paid the bill and thanked the staff and left. Downtown Diner is a perfect place for weekend lazy brunches, or weekday dinners, especially with a perfectly executed American Diner them, which did not completely translate into an American menu, but absolutely no complaints here, as most of the items were fantastic with great cocktails, fantastic bar nibbles, and wonderful mains, and fantastic desserts, definitely coming back here with family. A rather minor but important remark about the live music, that was very American country music, but the acoustics were a bit too loud for our gang to have a proper conversation, if that can go milder, the experience would have been a...

Have passed by this place many times in CBD area.
Today decided to go there for lunch. Didn’t try their drinks menu as it was working day.
The interiors are vintage American diner. Recall this vibe from my days living in USA. Very nice.
Grilled Chicken with some veggies and rice was very good.
My friend took the juicy lucy chicken burger and said it was good too
Plenty of seating place during lunch hour. Limited parking but this place is close to Church Street Metro station.
The price of food dishes is very reasonable for CBD area. The menu is limited but not too small. There is some choice like pasta, salads, indian option, Chinese, burgers and sandwiches, ice cream etc
The service is good.
