Altair Capella: Where the Sky’s the Limit
Perched like a celestial sentinel above the frenetic office jungle of Salt Lake Sector V, the Ambuja Neotia’s boutique hotel, the Altair, stands tall. Now, I won’t comment on the hotel itself—perhaps it’s a lovely den of opulence, or maybe it’s just another 5-star temple to capitalism. But what I will comment on is the absolute gem they plopped on the rooftop. Enter Capella, the rooftop lounge-slash-skybar that’s less of a bar and more of a vibe. Think of it as an oasis of chill meets a raucous party pad, all wrapped in a bow of sophistication. And oh, it’s the bomb. No, really. It’s the kind of place that makes you wonder why Kolkata didn’t have something like this sooner.
This 20th-floor sky lounge, the Capella, is the chef’s kiss of open-air indulgence. Capella is apparently named after the brightest star in the constellation Auriga, and is the 6th brightest star in the night sky (thank you AI search). Equal parts sophisticated oasis and high-altitude party pad, it serves up niche cocktails. beer, and other alcohol & beverages, food, and sheesha for Kolkata’s well-heeled night owls. And let’s be real—this city desperately needed something like this. I grew up in a Kolkata that never dreamed of such a spot, and now here we are, clinking glasses under the cosmos.
The Vibes: Picture this: You’re sipping a top-shelf single malt (or a fancy mocktail if you’re feeling virtuous), staring up at the stars like a deep thinker. If your neck gets sore from all the celestial admiration, just lower your gaze to the sweeping cityscape below—metro lines snaking through the streets, car lights twinkling like misguided fireflies, and the frequent plane descending toward Dum Dum (you may reach, but you cannot touch). And if all this dazzling scenery somehow bores you (how?!), don’t worry—the people-watching is Michelin-star quality. The crowd is polished, effortlessly stylish, and frankly, better dressed than you (but we’ll pretend not to notice). If you are wishing to impress your lady, or want to take cues, look around.
The Grub: Tired of Kolkata’s never-ending parade of Biryanis and Chaaps? Capella offers an elegant small-plate experience with an occasional nod to bigger appetites. The food is beautifully plated, meticulously prepared, and—wait for it—expensive. But hey, you didn’t come here to count pennies; you came to sip overpriced cocktails and revel in your high-altitude glory. Speaking of service, I’ve read complaints, but in my experience, it was solid. My only gripe? The music system had a split personality—soft one moment, thumping like a nightclub DJ had a personal vendetta against our eardrums the next. Some troubleshooting was clearly happening, and I appreciate the effort, but I’d rather not be the guinea pig for a sound engineering experiment while sipping my whiskey.
The Damage: Let’s talk money. Prices are comfortably nestled in “Western restaurant” territory, and after four cocktails, multiple starters, and an Indiana pizza (yes, that’s a thing), our bill hovered around US$70 (in INR, obviously). Fair, if you consider the ambiance tax. But should they hike it any further, we might have to sell a kidney to fund our next visit.
The Seating Situation: Comfortable? Absolutely. Choices? Yes, but beware. There are plush loungers that may be a death trap if your leg muscles are more “Netflix marathon” than “leg day at the gym.”
Parking & Security Shenanigans: Parking is available on the 3rd and 4th floors—but only after office hours, as dictated by a street-level security guy who seems to be running his own bureaucratic fiefdom. As for the main entrance security team, they communicate in the universal language of gruff rudeness. Efficiency is one thing; acting like you personally own the building is another.
Accessibility? Not Really. If you have mobility issues, there are multiple steps scattered throughout, and no visible attempt at making it...

Now a days people are more likely to prefer rooftop lounges rather than packed up interior with loud music because conversing in loud music is next to impossible thing. The best solution of which is rooftop where music is on at high volume but it doesn't bother you can easily talk to your loved ones with an amazing view of the CITY OF JOY at evening or night.
Capella is a rooftop lounge with indoor sitting arrangements also situated at the 20th floor of the Altair Hotel. The place is damn amazing with the perfect view of kolkata. Once you sit on the table you can feel the place. It is best suitable for dates & important meetings.
It is located in Salt Lake Sector 5 just opposite of IIHM College. The parking is not at all an issue here. Ample car parking space. For Capella the car parking is in 2nd floor after than you have to take lift to reach at the top.
Ambience Cannot be explained in words because words are less to express it. For ambience only I will surely recommended the place. Large sitting capacity is available but getting a table on the side of the rooftop is little difficult on weekends because everyone choose those tables first only.
In food & Drinks we ordered
DRINKS ::
》 LIME & LYCHEE TWIST 》RED WINE 》ORANGE JUICE BASED MOCKTAIL ( Note : Special prepared by them so name not available in menu also & forget to click a picture also.)
FOOD::
》 NON VEG KEBAB PLATTER - (Rs 849/-) This platter consists of different types of kebab
Chicken Tikka (3 pcs) - The tikka kebab was really good in taste. The chicken was juicy & there is a perfect balance of spices.
Fish Finger (3 pcs) - The size of the fingers was good. The fish was not giving a small amount of smell also. It was served with mayyonise.
Chicken Coins (3 pcs)- It's a normal chicken cutlet shaped into small round shaped.
Prawn crackers (2 pcs) - Basically its prawn papad.
Purani Dilli Seekh ( 3 pcs) - It's a mutton seekh kebab. The mutton keema was mixed with spices then grilled in tandoor. The size is also good & served with green chutney.
Service is too good. After every 5-10 mins someone was coming & asking about the food or anything else we need. They were visiting each & every table one by one periodically. Prices are definately are on the higher side but the ambience & view justified it. The food quantity need to be improved immediately. It's a premium place but then also the quantity is not justified according to price....
Read moreWell there r many factors for which I overall gave 5 star but to be truthful it wasn’t a very joyful experience. During this restriction time it can be totally agreed that by 8 the restaurant has to be closed . So around 620 we call Alt air as we were near sector 5 whether it is open n the lady said yes ma’am u can come till 7 is the last entry . So we rushed with my child and 2 guests for a a quick dinner . From here our misery starts . The parking was so steep n there was no one to guide us it was really difficult to move wit a big car as at the turnings it was kinda edge to edge. Well after that we were headed to a wrong lift the service lift which ended up in some kinda kitchen and we were redirected to the restaurant after a big hassle. We finally reach there before 7 and they tell no ma’am since u dint do prior reservations we can’t give u table. Now when I called I specifically asked should I book a table they were like no ma’am if u come before 7 it’s fine. We called ITC or Marriott both denied any service for night so if it was so Alt air could have also said us we would have not taken that much trouble to be there . It was really embarrassing to face this kinda a harassment with guest and a child. But finally we were given a table at around 715 pm. Now must be wondering why did I give A 5 start rating after this harassment.😀 Well reasons r many. First it really affects a business wit any negative rating. Secondly we were really taken care well . The food was served super fast 😅 they gave us deadline to finish the food by half n hour n leave the place 😂(totally understood it’s the government regulation )We ordered a pizza which was 9/10 crispy baby corn 10/10 drums of heaven 9/10 and a spaghetti but by mistake they had served us penne pasta6/10.but the manager or the supervisor noticed we were served the wrong item but we were in no mood of replacing as we had to leave the place asap. The supervisor is was so kind enough that he saw my baby had ordered spaghetti n penne was served so he repacked for us the spaghetti 9/10 and also gave my daughter a complimentary brownie with vanilla ice cream . This kinda a gesture is really kind as they understood we went through a lot of hassle just to get a table . The food was good the ambience was totally rocking , the crowd was good, the outside view from 20 th floor was mind blowing. And above all we were really taken good care from the staffs. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 Will...
