I recently visited Banng in Gurgaon with a friend and, unfortunately, the experience was quite underwhelming—especially considering we ended up spending over Rs. 7,000 and still left the place hungry. The portion sizes were shockingly small, and the pricing felt completely unjustified.
To give some perspective—I live in Paris, and I can confidently say I could have a better, more satisfying meal for two there at a lower cost.
There were a few things we appreciated: The ambience is definitely modern and well-designed. There’s an attempt at creativity in both the food and drinks. The menu sounds innovative on paper, and the presentation of some dishes was eye-catching. However, the execution just didn’t live up to the promise.
Here are the key issues we faced: • The grilled chicken was extremely basic—comparable to what you’d get at a regular restaurant in Delhi for Rs. 600, nothing special or memorable. • The cocktails were highly priced, and one even came with a raw mango-flavored rim, which sounded interesting but didn’t pair well at all with the drink—it felt more like a novelty than a thoughtful flavor pairing. • Having lived in Thailand, I was especially looking forward to the Thai-inspired dishes. Sadly, the Thai flavors were far from authentic, and even as a fusion attempt, the dishes missed the mark completely. • The dessert was a true disappointment. The concept was genuinely interesting and had potential, but the coconut ice cream was poorly churned, icy, and uneven in texture, making it inedible. A great idea that fell flat in execution. • Service was okay—not rude, but not proactive or particularly helpful either. For a concept restaurant with such pricing, we expected more engagement and guidance from the staff.
In short, Banng feels like a place that relies heavily on aesthetics and hype, but fails to deliver on the fundamentals—flavor, portion size, value, and consistency.
I truly believe the team has potential and some creative ideas, but there needs to be a stronger focus on taste, authenticity, and guest satisfaction for the overall experience to match...
Read moreOverpriced and Antiquated- two simple words that describe this new place @ Horizon Plaza, Gurgaon.
They really need to work on their guest experience at the gate/ usher. Snooty and arrogant staff turning off guests telling they are booked while 40% of the restaurant is empty inside (we were there for over 1.5 hours and almost half of the covers were empty in anticipation for some guests). We saw a lot of guests being turned away for not having a booking and almost us also being turned away despite having a booking and telling us that they are very busy tonite (don't know with whom since they were turning away guests with bookings) Previous week we were turned back for not having a booking.. This could be the first restaurant in the region to turn back guests with bookings.. whooaaa..
Decor is too red for comfort of the normal eye.. yes its thai in decor but towards the sleazy side of Bangkok ( having lived in that city for some years).. beautifully detailed with a lot of lounge seating but maximum tables are for larger groups which means either they would eventually struggle to get large groups after initial hay days are over or will waste covers and dent their revenue..
Coming to the most important aspect of any restaurant - the food.. well high priced for the small small orcactually absent potion sizes (am being nice to them) on the starters. For eg- the Thai fried chicken had 4 pieces of KFC chicken popcorn for Rs 660, it is nothing short of a naked loot. The chicken dimsums (5 pieces) were borderline cold but with a nice tangy sauce, and their signature salad again left a lot to desire in the size of the potion. The main course was better still with decent serving size ( although less by other comparable standards) . The Krapow was quite flavourful and a delight in the overall not so great experience.
Overall, might not come again but still it doesn't matter to them I guess. There is enough FOMO crowd and HNI wealth in and around the Golf Course Road in Gurgaon to make them make millions around a hit and...
Read moreWe ordered the Thai Fried Chicken, "Crazy" Fried Rice and Soft shell crab - which was described as "Mains". The food was really great. However, there was a mismatch in expectations, as we thought the crab would be a gravy and it turned out to be a stir-fry, which was not mentioned in the menu or explained by the server.
The sore point here was that the server herself was clueless on how to resolve this for us, and it took a good 20 minutes for someone senior to even come to the table and talk to us. While the senior understood the expectation mismatch and graciously offered us a thai curry, that dish didn't turn up for the next 20 minutes.
After having spent 40 minutes in sorting this, talking to 5 different staff members, and being fed up, we decided to ask for the bill and wind up our lunch, with the curry still not at the table. Thats when the staff suddenly woke up, profusely apologized, waived off our full food bill (while we insisted to pay for the food we had eaten) and packed the curry and rice for us to takeaway.
While i appreciate the gesture, the overall experience was less than desirable. With chef Garima's name involved, we had walked in as much for the experience as the food. While the food really lived up to it, the experience and service unfortunately did not.
It felt like our time wasn't valued, we weren't a priority for the staff and action was only taken after multiple follow ups from us. I'll maybe give them a few months to settle their service and staff, considering that they just opened, before I think about...
