I cannot stress how hard it is to receive a triple 5 star experience in Kochi, but I genuinely think this is the first cafe that I've been to that absolutely deserves it.
Hedge cafe is one of those lesser known cafes and I truly hope it stays that way, just so that it doesn't become a rush to get a table. Every part of the experience from the food to the service was amazing. The ambience was similar to that of a beautiful bar in a 5-star hotel, calming and yet elegant. The servers we had were quick and responsive. We ordered a total of 5 dishes:
French onion soup: I am a someone who is obsessed with this soup, so when I tell you it was good, trust me it was GOOD. Creamy with a lovely layer of cheese on top which was not too heavy. There was more chicken than I expected, which was a nice surprise, and the onions were well caramelized and didn't taste bitter(like you'd find if they were overcooked). It was served in a bowl of bread that I ate after the fact, and the bread itself could've been a starter all on its own. Recommended.
Prawn toast: This was the most prawn tasting toast that you could imagine. That might sound obvious, but there have been plenty of times where you order a prawn dish and the flavor is overpowered. This time, it was front and center, and it was a prawn lovers dream. The quantity could've been better however, since the actual amount totalled to little more than a regular sandwich.
Spicy crumb fried chicken burger: A decently sized, crunchy burger which had the chicken doused in a lovely sauce that we can't quite put a finger on. Served with potato chips on the side, a good burger, but I wouldn't tell you its the best you can find. Good enough for the price.
Sheperd's Pie: Its very rare to find this dish in Kochi, so I decided to try it. It was served in a bowl with a layer mashed potatoes overlying a thick layer of ground meat that was seasoned well. There was however a lack of vegetables, which is what you'd find in the authentic version of this dish. That doesn't detract from how great it was though, and its a good dish to warm you up(although in Kochi that might not be the best thing considering the weather)
Brioche bun with caramel custard: Let me tell you I was slightly worried this was going to be a glorified cream bun, but I am so happy to be wrong. This was a bun coated with a caramel shell that provided a lovely crunch. It also had a small caramel flan on top that just added to the entire experience. It was filled with custard and served on a sea of caramel and powdered sugar. The description on the menu said there was chocolate, however we didn't notice any at all, but if you disregard that, it was a fantastic dessert and especially good if youre a fan of caramel. Highly recommended.
This cafe is one of those finds that I am extremely happy to have in my folder, and I absolutely will be visiting again some day. A triple 5 star experience in food, ambience, and service, if youre looking for a place to spend your time and money for some good food, this is the...
Read moreWent here because of a friend's praise of the place and her claim of affordability. But had a disappointing experience. The food was like any other place that served continental. Nothing special about the food or the way it was served. Of the things we tried, the Shepherd's pie was lovely, the quantity could have been more for the price. The other food we had was meh, not worth mentioning. The pricing too, it was just like any other slightly overpriced continental restaurant. If you compare it with Pandhal maybe it's a little less costly but that doesn't make it reasonable or affordable so I disagree with all of the reviews, even my friend's, that claim affordability. They just probably haven't been to a diverse group of cafes/restaurants.
Another important factor that took away from my experience was the ambience. The environment felt a bit hostile and not welcoming. The staff were polite but something about their demeanor and glances were off putting. The lighting, the layout, and the furniture are all put together to resemble a high profile dining space, which is all well and good, but to me, the place lacked any sort of warmth. i don't think there's anything anywhere about fine dining needing to be so hostile. The only non-hostile person there was the security guard who helped us park! Do consider other designs when it's time to renovate in the future. Also, please take into consideration having a better curated playlist.
Will probably not visit the place again. The moody hostile environment, and food we can get from literally every other continental restaurant; explains why the place was empty...
Read moreYeyyy!!! Kochi has another new place for great food! It's Hedge cafe!! I had lunch on a Sunday afternoon with my family. It's located on Chittor road next to Royal Enfield showroom. The cafe is located on the first floor. There is additional large parking space in the nearby plot other than the one below for 4-5 cars. There is no elevator, so one will have to climb a floor up. The ambience inside is quite relaxing and great interior design. The kitchen is transparent and it's nice to see activity inside the same. Comfortable seating for groups as well as high chair with working ports for singles. The best part obviously is the food. We ordered the French onion soup, noodle soup and the broccoli almond soup. Served in a bread bowl the French onion soup just melted away all my inhibitions!! That's how a great chef sets the mood for the entire meal.... Perfect!! The loaded fries was just yummy!!! I am not a big fan of Western cuisine, but I just gave in to the finesse of this chef dishing out such delicious stuff. Then came Beef in burnt garlic, spaghetti, pan grilled fish, mushroom stroganoff and canun peri epri fries, everything was made with such perfection. We also had the famous Kaya toast, which is a blend of textures and tastes, and creme brulee again excellent. I topped all this with a vietnameae hot coffee. Absolutely loved the experience. Hedge turned my Sunday afternoon golden!! The staff here are very attentive and courteous. There is also workspace here where groups can meet and...
