Pathetic experience.
HIGHLIGHTS Overcrowded dining space Pathetic in cleanliness The same person who serves Biriyani from the Biriyani pot cleans up the table Oily and clumsy dining table even after cleaning. 2 pedestal fans for about 30-35 persons inside the restaurant. Overpriced and overrated biriyani. Soft Afghan chicken Wattery gravy of Afghan chicken instead of cashew nuts. "Dining in Hell" kinda experience with a/c switched off.
Here's my detailed experience at Jeff Biriyani.
Went to Cochin just to try the Afghan Chicken. We were a group of 6. Had to park our car about 50m away from the shop (no car parking area for Jeff Biriyani). Waited for about 20 minutes to get inside the restaurant. We had to settle for a table which could only accomodate 4. Table was messed up with rice and some fluids. A guy came with a piece of cloth and a water sprayer, while we were seated around the table. He sprayed water in few places of the table and wiped it off with cloth. Wiped the entire table and mashed the rice and left the table as such. A layer of off-white coloured oil could be seen throughout the table. We thought that the guy would come back with another piece of cloth to clean that up; but the guy went directly to the biriyani pot to serve Biriyani.
Here at Jeff Biriyani, biriyani is served Identical to that of Rs. 50/- Ambur Biriyani outlets in Bangalore.
The whole restaurant could accommodate about 25 persons at a time; yet about 35 were dining there at that time. We 6 were sweating a lot and when looked around we could see that only two pedestal fans were used to cool down the entire place when the a/c was left switched off (restrictions on air conditioning was lifted by the government months ago). When looked around I could see that everyone inside the restaurant, including the person at the cash counter and the ones serving the biriyani were drenched in sweat.
Dishes and prices were exhibited. The list contained just three items and was all priced Rs. 200/-. We ordered 4 chicken biriyani and two beef biriyani with three Afghan chicken. We were served a salad(lettuce, carrot and cucumber). Then came six black plates and six glasses for us with bottles of packaged drinking water. The table was full and couldn't accommodate our biriyani pots. Biriyani was quickly transferred to our plates.
A plate of biriyani isn't filling at all. Not commenting on the flavour and taste of the Biriyani since it varies with the taste buds of each person. I didn't like the biriyani. Afghan chicken was very soft and drenched in loose gravy. As contrary to the consistency of gravy seen in the videos of food vloggers, gravy was very loose and lacked the flavour of cashew nut. Not to exaggerate, by the time we left the restaurant, we did sweat out all the water that we drank.
Since we didn't click pictures, pictures posted along with the review of JESLA AZEEZ will walk you through the condition of the dining table at any given...
Read moreWell, Jeff Biriyani is not for everyone. The food is good, no doubt, but this is is not the typical biriyani that you are used to.
I reached the place around 11:30 AM to make sure to get "apricot mutton biriyani", thanks to all food vloggers for making it popular. But alas, it was already sold out! Hence I decided to try the beef biriyani.
The first question the gentleman/owner there asked me was when I'll be eating the food. That seemed a little odd to me, as I could eat it any time, right? But no, he had his reason for that question. Apparently, Jeff Biriyani loses its flavour/taste if not consumed immediately. He informed that, there are many cases of people complaining about the biriyani after eating the same long since it was taken away.
Call it good salesman skills or whatever, the guy made sure that I bought a portion of the "famous" Afghani chicken as well (to be honest, I wasn't keen on ordering that). But hey, that's ok - it's a new dish to me anyway!
Like the person said, I made sure to have a very early lunch (at 12:30 PM), to enjoy Jeff Biriyani in all its glory. But..
The quality of the food was good, no doubt. But it was just an average experience to me (maybe I was expecting a lot or it wasn't suiting my taste buds). The biriyani had a tangy flavour which may not go well with a lot of people. Also, the beef pieces had a lot of fat which diminished the overall taste. But again, not complaining on the quality. Coming to Afghani chicken, it felt very bland. The cashew paste and cream was overpowering the chicken, and I could not finish it (don't worry I saved it for dinner 😁)
So, overall, Jeff Biriyani was a little disappointing to me. But I was really pleased with the way the shop owners spoke to me. They explained why so many people had bad experiences after consuming the food late, and that it has nothing to do with the food quality.
Will I try it again? Maybe I will, from their outlet in Thoppumpady. And one more thing, parking could be an issue in Edapally outlet, if you are driving a car. If you are in a 2-wheeler, there are ample...
Read moreHad heard so much about their Biryani and Afghani Chicken that I had to try them. This Eddapally outlet is opened throughout the day as the other 2 outlets are only open for lunch. Had the Chicken Biryani and the Afghani Chicken with Roomali Roti and it was worth the visit. The chicken biryani is very different from the locally available ones. It is Bohra Biryani Or Bombay Biryani served with onion & cabbage salad (Kachumber) and a sweet achaar. Biryani was so flavorful and delicious. The Afghani Chicken however was on another level. It's incredibly delicious, so creamy and juicy. One of the best chicken preparations. Had it with Roomali Roti and it went perfectly well. The outlet is nice with decent seating space, located by the main road. One of the wall is filled with photo frames of the owners with celebrities who visited their place. The menu consists of only a few items, chicken and beef biryani and Afghani chicken. Service was good. Portion size is very good and pricing might seem above average but it's worth the quality and offering.
