We, a family of five seniors, visited Breeze The Sky Lounge on Sunday, November 2nd. Our experience was a mix of highs and lows.
Location and Parking: The restaurant is located on the 7th floor of the Avenue Hotel, at the busy junction of Gurusaday Dutta Road and Ballygunge Circular Road. We arrived by car just before 8 PM. Parking was tricky. Free roadside parking (on the opposite side) is available, and the hotel claims a section is for guests, but nothing is marked. This section of Ballygunge Circular Road is one-way until 8 PM, which complicated our parking. Even with the guard guiding us, a local policeman approached us as soon as we parked, and we had to explain ourselves before he was satisfied.
Hotel Access and Facilities: The hotel lobby suggests a lack of quality, doesn't appear to be a 3-star property as claimed. Access to the lounge is a significant issue for anyone with mobility problems. The small elevator only goes to the 6th floor; you must climb a flight of stairs to reach the 7th-floor restaurant. We had to split our group into two for the tiny elevator.
There is no washroom on the restaurant floor itself, requiring another trip down to the 6th floor, which we avoided. General cleanliness was also a concern, as we noticed food particles on the floor in the dining area and poor upkeep on the 6th floor.
Ambiance: Terrace vs. Indoors: The venue has an open-air terrace to the right and an indoor AC dining room to the left. We initially checked the terrace but quickly decided against it It was warm. It was mostly filled with young couples and groups smoking shisha (hookah), and a few dining families. There were many flying insects, typical of the season. The view was nice on one side but not "spectacular" as other reviews claimed; we have seen much better views at other Kolkata rooftops.
We moved indoors to the small AC dining room, which has a long mocktail bar (note: no alcohol is served here). The staff joined two tables for us. The AC was comfortable, but some flying insects still found their way inside and were falling on us. The decor was Moroccan-themed but lacked a classy touch. Maintenance seemed poor; sections of the wooden floor felt unstable and sank when stepped on.
Food and Drink Highlights: The food was generally excellent, despite several items being unavailable (including the large platter and chicken momos we wanted). Here is what we ordered:
Blue Berry Breeze Mocktail: Excellent, possibly the best we’ve had. They moderated the sweetness perfectly (5/5). Fish Fingers: Excellent. They use Basa fish, but it was crispy outside and juicy inside (5/5). Peri Peri Chicken Wings: Very good. Large and tasty (4/5). Chicken Tikka: Excellent. Fresh and juicy, unlike many other places (5/5). Cheese and Corn Momos (Pan-fried): Nice (4/5). Chicken Tikka Pizza: Nice. Made on a very thin bread base (like a wrap), but large and good tasting (4/5). Vanilla Ice Cream with Chocolate Syrup: Two scoops per serving, slightly melted but tasted nice (4/5).
Service and Billing Issues: The staff were friendly and hard-working but unprofessional. Service felt like a 'dhaba style'. Only one person was managing both the busy outdoor and indoor areas and was totally overwhelmed. He apologized several times for the slow service due to short staffing. A person at the bar briefly helped but returned to the bar due to high demand. An unfortunate detail: a third young staff member joined the indoor bar area and continuously smoked shisha, belching out thick smoke, which was unpleasant.
We recommend checking your bill carefully, as ours had a significant mistake that was quickly corrected when pointed out.
Overall: The kitchen service closes early (around 10 PM even on Sundays), so arrive early. While the food is good, the restaurant is overhyped. The operational and facility shortcomings detract significantly from the...
Read moreIf I could give zero stars, I would. Easily one of the worst dining experiences of my life.
A few months ago, my boyfriend and I decided to visit this place after seeing some aesthetically pleasing pictures online. We were misled. The moment we arrived, the entire experience started going downhill, and fast.
To even get to the restaurant, we had to take a shady elevator inside what looked like a rundown, low-budget hotel. For a place situated in Minto Park, this was honestly shocking and set a really uncomfortable tone right away.
When we reached the rooftop, the terrace area did look nice. That part was genuinely pretty, and we were hoping it would salvage the evening. But of course, all those tables were apparently booked. Fine, we understood that. We were then asked to sit indoors, and that’s where things just turned outright unpleasant.
The indoor space was dark, depressing, and again - SHADY. The vibe felt off, like the kind of place you instantly regret entering. The staff didn’t help. They had absolutely ZERO communication skills, barely able to form a coherent sentence when speaking to us. But what was worse was how they spoke amongst themselves: loud, indecent slang right in front of customers. No sense of basic decency, tone, or respect. It was not just unprofessional, it was downright uncomfortable.
At this point, we were already uneasy, but we decided to stay and order. Big mistake. We ordered a lemonade to start with, and what we got tasted like some watered-down Rs. 10 roadside drink. No flavor, no freshness, just sugary liquid in a glass.
The pasta we ordered alongside the lemonade (mind you, we had a strong feeling that the food is gonna be terrible, so we decided to first taste things) forgettable at best. Then we ordered another drink from the menu, which never arrived even after 30+ minutes of waiting. No updates, no apologies, just total chaos and disinterest. But more than that, the overall energy and environment made it impossible to enjoy anything. It didn’t feel like we were out for a nice evening, it felt like we were stuck somewhere we couldn’t leave fast enough.
At that point, we’d had enough. We paid for whatever we’d received (reluctantly) and walked out. That place was a complete waste of time, money, and energy.
This place thrives on misleading aesthetics online. But if you care even remotely about good service, decent staff behavior, clean vibes, or a basic sense of comfort - STAY FAR AWAY. The pictures may tell you one story, but the experience is a whole other...
