Gunjan – A Hidden Gem for Cantonese-Style Chinese in College Street
If you're a fan of authentic Cantonese-style Chinese food and don’t mind trading ambiance for flavor, Gunjan is a must-visit spot tucked away in the bustling College Street area.
Despite its small and cozy setup with limited seating, the place was buzzing with people during lunchtime—clearly a hotspot among locals. I had to wait a bit to get a seat, which already spoke volumes about its popularity.
I first tried the Chicken Wonton Soup, which cost me ₹90 and came with four wontons. The broth was clean and clear, yet packed with flavor. The overall dish was soothing, comforting, and absolutely pleasurable—a must-try if you visit Gunjan! The meaty aroma of the chicken stock made it delightfully delicious. Definitely a 10/10.
As they say, "morning shows the day"—this amazing start made me even more excited for the next dishes I had ordered, which were on their way!
I ordered a half portion of Mixed Burnt Garlic Fried Rice and half portion of Mixed Schezwan Fried Rice, both priced at just Rs. 120.To my surprise, the portions were generous—easily enough for two people with an appetite like mine. The Burnt Garlic Fried Rice was bursting with flavor, had the perfect garlic aroma, and was cooked to perfection. The Schezwan Fried Rice was too much flavourful with hotness of spices tanginess of different sauces and smoky flavours as it cooked to perfection in high flame, it's totally a bursting of different flavours at every bite"not for faint hearted".The Quality, quantity, and taste—the dishes nailed it. I would easily rate these 2 dishes 10/10 and 9/10 respectively.
Next, I tried the half portion of Kung Pao Chicken, priced at Rs. 130. Though they might have served a different chicken dish by mistake (possibly due to the rush), it was still quite satisfying. The dish came hot, featuring tender, juicy boneless chicken chunks drenched in a spicy chili-based sauce. Not the Kung Pao I expected, but tasty nonetheless. I'd rate it 8/10. Then I tried the half portion of Boneless Chilli Chicken(gravy),priced at Rs.110.This is the only dish that disappointed me the flavour is too much savoury and salty instead of tangy and the famous common flavour of chilli chicken we used to have but the chicken chunks were fresh, juicy boneless and very tender.I'd rate it 6.5/10. As a must-try at any authentic Chinese restaurant, I couldn’t skip the pork—and I’m glad I didn’t! The roasted chilli pork was cooked to absolute perfection. The quality of the meat stood out immediately: tender, juicy, and not at all chewy (which is a common issue with pork, but thankfully not here). The balance between flesh and fat was spot-on, enhancing both the texture and flavor of the dish.
Overall, it was everything a great pork dish should be. An easy 10/10!
Overall, Gunjan might not impress you with its decor or space—yes, it’s quite congested—but it absolutely delivers on the food front. If you’re looking for delicious, affordable Chinese food in College Street, Gunjan is worth the visit. Just be prepared for a bit of a wait during peak hours!

Read moreCollege Street is a place for bookaholics but with lots of food counters its a lovers point for foodies too. Gunjan Chinese Food is a over hyped Chinese food counter where you may go by following its higher rating but you probably be disappointed too.
Location : This place is very easy to locate at Suriya Sen Street just to the corner of the lane. Its near to the very famous chop shop Kalika & the nearest metro station is Central.
Decorations : With maximum of 10 sitings available the restaurant is very small & available crowds at the time of evening may make you wait a bit to get a sit over there. Its a non AC cabin but the sittings are comfortable than you expect. The Chinese elegant lightings make the ambience really good. Overall looks clean & hygienic.
Staffs : Being in a small place the staffs response fast & they also serve you fast. Not only that the guys can even explain you their foods & recommend you too.
Foods : When my hungry friend Akash left half of his chowmeing unfinished then I became sure about their quality of the foods.
Egg Hakka Chow : The chowmein was very thick & very less vegetables were used with it. Very lite spices were there but well mixed. The eggs were not mixed well. Overall it tasted not that good as I expected from here.
Egg Gravy Chow : In case of Gravy Chowmein the same quality of chowmein were used. The gravy was not very thick & tasted very off. Even here also very less vegetables were used. Appropriate spices were not present so it tasted very bad to me. You may need to add lots of sauce & paper to gulp this.
Egg Sichuan Fried Rice : The rice looked pretty light with small diced vegetables in it & the light color of it. The rice used were of local very low grade quality therefore as expected neither it tasted good nor it smells. There wasn't any taste of the rice, the single taste that was visible of chilli powder & it was making the dish too hot.
Chilli Chicken : The half plate offers 6 pieces of chicken. The boneless chicken pieces were very small & not at all well cooked. The taste of spices were not coming from the chicken. There was only green chillies & very small amount of onions & it completely missed the capsicums. The gravy was completely tasteless actually better to say it tasted like water was mixed with soya sauce only. Gravy was very thin & not preferable with other dishes. The over rich garlic smell coming from the dish disappointed me a lot.
Pricing : The menu card prices seems very affordable & especially when they don't even make you pay to the govt it can be a good choice for some kind of people. Unfortunately considering the quality of the food I will not be counted as those kind of persons. It was absolute not a value for money deal for me at all.
Conclusion : In my opinion the pathetic odd food quality of this place can be compromised for any others restaurants located at the same locality. Where I didn't found anything special over here still the crowd especially at the time of evening proves the popularity of...

During a recent visit to this small eatery near College Street, we sampled the Mixed Fried Rice with Roasted Chilli Pork Gravy. The experience left much to be desired, especially if you are seeking authentic Chinese cuisine.
#Mixed Fried Rice The portion of the fried rice was disappointing in terms of quantity. The taste was mediocre, not quite living up to the expectations of a flavorful Schezwan dish. The presentation was lackluster, barely enticing. Overall, it scored:
Quality: 6/10 Quantity: 4/10 Taste: 5/10 Presentation: 1/10 Overall: 4/10
Roasted Chilli Pork Gravy The Roasted Chilli Pork Gravy was the biggest letdown. Far from the authentic taste, it resembled an ordinary pork gravy. The quantity was again inadequate for the price charged, and the taste was bland and uninspiring. The dish scored extremely low in all aspects:
Quality: 2/10 Quantity: 3/10 Taste: 1/10 Presentation: 1/10 Overall: 1/10
Ambience and Service This restaurant can accommodate a maximum of 10 people at a time, making it a cozy but cramped space. The service was quick, which is a plus, but it did not make up for the subpar food quality and quantity.
Conclusion This restaurant appears to cater primarily to students looking for a quick and affordable bite rather than gourmet enthusiasts. If you find yourself in the College Street area and in need of a fast meal, it might suffice. However, if you are seeking authentic and delicious Chinese cuisine, you may want to look elsewhere.
Visit this place only if convenience outweighs your desire for exceptional taste and quality.
We tried mixed Fried Rice with Roasted Chilli Pork Gravy. Quantity wise fried rice portion was not upto the mark. Never tasted anything like this roasted chilli pork. It was just like an ordinary pork gravy. Nothing close to the authentic roasted chilli pork. I think this restaurant is only for students who don't have a proper idea about Chinese foods and their taste. This restaurant is only for school and college goers for a quick bite. Not for gourmet people like us who purely categorize restaurants only based on how it tastes. This small restaurant can accommodate max 10 heads at a time. Service is quick enough. But I didn't like the quantity of both fried rice and roasted chilli pork keeping in mind its price.
Only visit this restaurant if you are in the college St area and looking for okay type Chinese foods nothing...
