One of the few places, where you will get good quality food at very reasonable price. I live in Park Circus area, which isn't very far from this place, yet I am almost ignorant of the ageless eating options in the north of Calcutta. I was introduced to be this place by a friend long back and loved the singara. Which is the only thing I had back then. Recently I was feeling rather hungry and decided to go and have the singara and then realised they have a decent seating option as well. When I ordered the kochuri (very similar to Puri or luchi and has very less in common to the hing kachori which some of you might be more familiar with) the puri was rather light and the chana dal, which was slightly sweet was a perfect match. They charged ₹32 for 4 pieces and I also ordered for the singara, which was as usual devine and this time I also got myself the chatni. I generally don't like the chatni, yet I am glad I asked for it. It was made with very good quality honey among other very decent ingredients. I got myself a few of the sweets, had them over the past few days. I wouldn't recommend having the sweet right from the fridge, as they get quite hard and don't taste as well. Yet I invariably don't have the time to keep the sweet outside before having. I plan to take many more of my loved one's to this place. So they can appreciate food, which doesn't seem to have changed over the centuries and the pricing doesn't reflect the inflation. Which teaches me something about business. You can deliver quality without raising the price all the time. This place is self service, tiny chairs and a friendly environment. Sadly they don't give you the chatni with the singara when you do a parcel. So carry something which you. And do try most of the offering, the sweet is not the best in town, but quite decent, certainly better than most sweet shop available on southern part...

A horrible incident happened to me today, I went for parcel and he took the money and refused that I have not given any money and instead insulted me, It is a shame for anyone if someone gets embarrassed by the shopkeeper in front of other customers for not paying, they don’t even have camera so that I can able to prove it, I stay far away and because i want my mother to try their kachori once, I went there for parcel but instead it created such a scene which is really hard to describe, I lost my ₹100 for nothing, I don’t die because of that ₹100 but the behaviour and the insult that he did to me in front of other people is not acceptable, I really feel ashamed, being an educated guy I have to face such consequences from a so called famous shop of Kolkata, I will never forget this insult and will never visit the place again. Thanks to the Shopowner(an old man with gray hair and wrinkle below his eyes and a mole) for such a nice behaviour and stay happy with that ₹100, you have lost a regular customer which doesn’t matter to you. I have never expected that such an incident will happen to me ,that too in a famous shop like this, I have made a mistake of paying before the parcel has been handed over to me and face such a horrible insult from a frustrated and rude owner. Moreover he snatched the parcel from my hand, I can’t even express it to anyone that how rudely he insulted me. Last but not the least a shopkeeper’s behaviour reflects the shop’s image

It's always been kind of an enigma for me as to why not even a single sweetmeat shop in South Kolkata can compete with the North Kolkata ones, even after having all the capital and resources. I guess it boils down to only one thing. 'Skill'. One can replicate anything but the skill an experienced 'Karigor' brings to the table is inimitable. Their dexterity has been passed on to them by their ancestors. No one can compete with the moxie procured through centuries and passed down through generations. 'Putiram' is one such place where they have been producing delectable sweet items for many decades. Have been in love with their Radhaballavis and 'white' Mishti doi since college. They serve cholar dal (split Bengal gram) alongside the Radhaballavis. You might get a taste of their flavorful Alur torkari if you're in luck as it's not available all the time. Apart from their Mishti Doi and Radhaballavis, the sweetmeats they produce are hands down among the best in Kolkata. Do not miss them for the world. Hope someday they open a branch in South Kolkata as well. These greenhorns in South need to have a run for their money.
