Visiting a bar is meant to be an experience of enjoyment, relaxation, and social interaction. Unfortunately, my recent visit to Nutcase Bar was anything but enjoyable. What should have been a memorable evening quickly turned into a frustrating encounter due to the arrogant, disrespectful, and unprofessional behavior of the staff, combined with a corporate buyout policy that makes no sense for running a hospitality business.
From the moment I entered Nutcase, the staff displayed a noticeable lack of warmth and professionalism. There were no greetings, no smiles, and no acknowledgment of guests. The attitude seemed almost deliberately discourteous, as if the staff were doing customers a favor by simply taking orders. When I asked questions about the drinks menu, I was met with dismissive responses and eye rolls, an attitude that is completely unacceptable in a service-oriented environment.
The service itself was slow, disorganized, and inattentive, even though the bar was not crowded. Orders were ignored for long periods, and when finally served, they were accompanied by a tone of arrogance that made it clear that the staff had no interest in providing a pleasant experience. Attempting to escalate these concerns to the management was equally disappointing, as the responses were defensive and dismissive, indicating a systemic problem with the barâs approach to customer service.
In addition to these serious service issues, the barâs buyout policy demonstrates a complete misunderstanding of what makes a hospitality business functional. For a bar, trust, goodwill, and relationships with customers and staff are far more critical than rigid ownership clauses. A buyout policy in such an environment encourages arrogance, centralization of control, and operational rigidity, which in practice undermines both employee motivation and customer satisfaction. No successful bar or restaurant can operate effectively if the core team is working under fear of forced buyouts or arbitrary managerial decisions.
From my perspective as a customer, this policy also signals misaligned priorities. Rather than investing in staff training, service quality, or customer experience, the management seems focused on legal mechanisms to control ownership and revenue. This is not just bad business strategy â it is actively harmful to the establishmentâs reputation and long-term sustainability. A business that cannot value its employees or guests over internal control mechanisms is doomed to fail, no matter how attractive its interiors or drink menu may appear.
The combination of arrogant, unprofessional staff and a rigid, impractical buyout policy makes Nutcase Bar a place I cannot recommend. Customers come to bars for an enjoyable experience, not to navigate dismissive attitudes or witness the negative effects of poorly thought-out corporate policies. Management should seriously reconsider its approach: prioritizing professional service, customer engagement, and staff motivation over arbitrary control measures.

Read moreTucked under a jazz club in the lanes behind Deshapriya Park, Nutcase Etc. isnât just a bar; itâs a fever dream âred pillâ in a typical sleepy bengali para. Bauhaus-inspired, no more speakeasy (not surprised) where cocktails arenât poured, theyâre philosophized and where existential angst comes shaken, not stirred.
This isnât a place that pretends to play it safe. At Nutcase, drinks are daring, dishes are disobedient, and every detail feels like an inside joke for the emotionally literate. Ha!
Take the Tangra Town cocktail, for instance. A heady reinterpretation of Kolkata's Indo-Chinese legacy in cocktail form. Itâs chilli chicken in a highball - tequila riding shotgun with chicken broth, soy, scallions, and bell peppers. Then my current favourite, the Nutcase Brekkie - whiskey steeped in childhood memories of a cereal bowl. The perfect drink for those who believe liquid courage could be had as a breakfast.
Though this is not a place to go eat; eat. The food menu holds its own, with mantou buns dipped in sinful butter garlic crab, five-spice smoked eggs crackling with chilli crisp that are unapologetically umami. Oh and the bloody addictive bar nuts.
Bhaiii it's small plates with bigly feelings.
What elevates Nutcase Etc. is not just the innovation but its audacity. It dares to turn childhood trauma into a cocktail, to plate and serve chaos with finesse, to tell you to wear a red clown nose while sipping bone marrow and bourbon (Rare Steak, Iâm talking to you). Itâs Berlin bar culture spiked with bhadralok achoron. Think hipster absurdity meets old school adda.
In a city that is shamelessly stuck in nostalgia for its past, Nutcase Etc. is a thrilling vision of its perceived future. One where bars donât just serve drinks they spark conversation, disarm you, and let you feel a little boka in the best way.
All said and done for me the cherry on top is the team behind Nutcase Etc. They are loving, they are caring and they work like the borg. Resistance to their care is futile. I bet they are the kind who would slap your wrist if you had one too many or probably even call you a cab home. Heck I'm pretty sure they would carry me home and tuck me in bed should that day ever come.
Come here not just to drink, but to feel. Come when you're happy. Come especially when youâre not. Bring a friend who talks too much. On second thoughts this is a bar you should brave alone! Because your drink might just answer back. Nutcase isnât for everyone, but for those who get it itâs pure, cocktail fuelled catharsis.
â 5/5 Unhinged in all...

The ambiance is super cozy yet effortlessly chic, making it the perfect spot to unwind. But let's talk about the stars of the show: the drinks and the food! As a self-proclaimed cocktail connoisseur, I'm always on the lookout for something unique, and this place absolutely delivered. "Quirky" doesn't even begin to cover it. I mean, sushi cocktails and Tangra Chilli Chicken cocktails? My mind was blown, and my taste buds were doing a happy dance! Each sip was an adventure, a delightful play on familiar flavors presented in the most unexpected and brilliant way. Seriously, you have to try them to believe how good they are. And the food? Oh my god, the food! It's not often that a bar's food menu stands shoulder to shoulder with its drinks, but here, it absolutely does. Every dish we tried was a masterpiece â fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. It's clear that as much thought and creativity goes into the culinary offerings as it does into those incredible cocktails. The staff were incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable, adding to that wonderful "at home" feeling. They were happy to guide us through the adventurous menu and ensure we had a fantastic time. If you're in Kolkata and looking for a new spot that breaks the mold, offers unbelievably creative drinks, and serves up food that's just as impressive, then you HAVE to check out Nutcase. It's more than just a night out; it's an experience! Can't wait to go back and try everything else...
