"Coffee Home" in Delhi, particularly the well-known branch in Connaught Place, stands as a unique establishment, distinct from the larger, historically significant "Indian Coffee House" chain. While both offer coffee, Coffee Home, run by the Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC), has carved its own niche as a beloved local spot, especially for senior citizens and office-goers seeking an affordable and comfortable space. Historically, Coffee Home in Connaught Place was inaugurated in 1989 by Delhi's Chief Executive Counselor Jagpravesh Chandra, specifically envisioned as a meeting place for senior citizens. This origin story highlights its immediate impact as a community-focused initiative, providing a much-needed social space in the bustling heart of the city. While other DTTDC-run Coffee Homes in areas like R.K. Puram and Vikas Puri have since closed, the Connaught Place branch has endured, a testament to its sustained relevance and patronage. Culturally, Coffee Home embodies a more understated charm compared to the grander narratives of the Indian Coffee House. It's known for its unpretentious ambiance, spacious interiors, and shaded open eating areas, fostering a relaxed atmosphere for conversations and daily routines. It's a place where regulars gather for discussions, where business deals are informally discussed, and where the simple pleasure of an affordable filter coffee or South Indian snack is cherished. Its significance lies in its role as an accessible, democratic space that continues to serve as a vital social anchor for a diverse clientele, providing a sense of continuity and community in Delhi's rapidly...
Read moreCoffee Home in Connaugt Place was built with the objective of serving good food and snacks to the visitors at a reasonable price and at a decent place. The place was famous as Coffee House during yesteryears.
The Coffee Home serves its purpose even today, though there are many a things that are an impediment to its popularity. Coffee Home is certainly not the first choice of those coming to the area.
At first look itself the place does not impress. If you sacrifice that then the menu would, perhaps, not impress you. What is served at Coffee Home is very limited and not-so-cheap for a quick bite. You get a couple of South Indian dishes besides chowmein and vegetable pulao. Of course, you get beverage too-- both hot and cold.
Coffee Home occupies a large area, both, covered and open. Still, unfortunately, it has failed to gain popularity among people. Strange but true!
I think it should include more in its menu like chana-bhatura, pao- bhaji, raj kachori, aloo tikki, poori-bhaji, grilled sandwiches etc. Such food is popular, gives you taste and satisfies your hunger.
Another shortcoming is is non-functional air-conditioning. It becomes too hot inside and guests start feeling incorporated. The hall has too little tables. It is important to open more sitting area by adding one more floor.
There are many senior citizens occupying the chairs just for gossiping and would not move for hours. This irritates those who are looking for a table for their share of bite.
Coffee Home in Connaugt Place needs to be given a fresh leaseeof life. It has the potential to become one of the most'wanted' hangout in a market which lacks reasonable outlets for snacks and...
