Fish O Fish. Kothrud, Pune.
Today I had couple of things to run by..By the time things were over it was 3 pm or so. Obviously lunch got missed and there was no way to return home in time for a nice home made meal.
So my son, and I opted for a quiet lunch. He isn't into sea food. For strange reason has taken a dislike which I am not able to comprehend for so many years.
So we found a less than busy road near by to park my Chevy Aveo and entered the eatery. The eatery is clam and cool. Nice location on a cross alley to the prominent road, but still away from the daily insufferable din of the Pune traffic. We were quickly seated by the owner Mr. Bagade. Young chap with lots of enthusiasm and energy.
We quickly went through the menu and ordered what was actually on our mind like a predetermined plan. A fish thali, Surmai for me and Chicken Thali for my son.
Owner promise ten to fifteen minutes. However he served in a jiffy.
My Surmai Thali has a particulary large fish steak. A smaller version in the curry. Customer dried shrimp chutney, green and red coconut chutney. Solkadhi and Tilav. I chose bhakari made of rice flour for the first serving and wheat chapati for the next.
My first stop was fish curry. I took a tiny bit of Bhakari and dipped in the curry. The near blandness of bhakri livened up in the curry. Konkani curries are always an enigma to me. Not very hot but spicy enough to entice you for more. The spices they use, coconut milk perhaps, Tirfal , Turmeric and chilly powder. I suspect they stone grind the masalas and use it with discretion. The Konkani cuisine taste is resultant product of the local coastal ingredients and methods, which are traditional yet subtly different. Alibuag Kashid, Malvan, Terekhol, Goa and Karwar, they all have finer nuances in their preprations which impart unique flavours and aroma. Fish O Fish managed to live up to the expectations. Curry wafted up nice flavour and faint aroma.
The fish was fresh and cooked well. Surmai is one of the easiest fish to eat. More meat and less bones which are prominent and one can't miss. So almost no risk while eating. I plucked a tiny piece and ate it. Solid meat, flaking well and had a good bite. The layers of Surmai are always amazing. Wonderful geometrical patterns..Good to see and even better to eat. Layer by layer. Alone the fish was superb, soaked in a curry it was exquisite.
Next stop was fried fish. Thin crusted, probably semolina, fresh fish fried well sans heavily dripping oil. Tried first without any chutney. Nice bite , good meatiness and layers holding each other well. I am no expert in the freshness of fish. But while consuming I can gauge the best. This was the best.
The green coconut chutney was a lot different from a normal chutney we have. It had a tangy flavour, almost like a raw mango.I enquired and pat came a reply. That was a lemon squeezed into it.
Fried fish really gelled well with both the chutneys..Talk about complimenting each other. Then this was easily the best combination.
Dries Shrimp Chutney is unique to any Konkani eatery. It's so good that a bhakari and chutney together will wreck havoc on your taste buds. Tad salty, crispiness from frying, little spicy but all the while perfectly done . You can pick it in a pinch and have it or take a tiny bit of Bhakari and create a morsel as you wish. Either ways it's a winner.
Solkadhi was little sour. Not much pungent. Though I found a green chilly submerged well in the bowl. It didn't hit hard. Tiwal was something different. Only had for the second time.
Both concoctions were extremely good to was the food down. No need to gulp water and stuff the tummy.
You need the precious space for the next round of curry and rice.
In a nutshell ,very nice sea food. I would say extremely courteous service from the management. Prices are reasonable for the location.
Good...

THE STORY OF FISH O FISH
Moshezz starts salivating at the name Of Fish and when Ajinkya invited her over to FIsh O Fish on a sunny afternoon to 🐾 paw up some gorgeous delightful delicacies from the sea food cuisines of West and South, she readily accepted and made her afternoon delicious and dainty along with Supandii and King Kong.
The afternoon began with glasses of chilled Kokum juice and two crispy well made tamales fried fishes walking to the table. #Khapi_rawa_fry & #Soundalya_rawa_fry were both delectably delicious and walloped off by the trio in minutes. The chutneys served along with the fry were extraordinaryily delicious and Moshezz unabashedly asked for second servings.
Supandi recalled having had #prawns_pullimunchi here once and the dish was brought to the table and full justice done to it in seconds by finishing it off and leaving not a single piece of prawn or a little lockable curry on the plate. Wiped off clean. That's what fish lovers like this trio do always. O fish! ! They r so greedy goblins I tell you but their love for fish makes them favourites of mine. I hope yours as well.
#Crab_Masala_Fry was recommended by Ajinkya and the trio decided to lay their taste buds to some good old masaledaar well spiced Crab masala. Succulent juicy hard shelled crabs but yet the curry masalas made their way through to win over the meaty juicy insides and add the jus of the masalas to the crab making it robust in taste and finger licking delicious.
The stomachs were full by then but Dil mange more and in walked the Surmai and Ponder Thali. Moshezz had a spoonful of the fish curry cooked in Goan masala and gave one verdict. A big zesty happy loud Meowww aka #must_try. Rich in colour texture n taste. Well what else can you ask for!! Dived in paws locked up well and good and canines pouncing up every bit of the Surmai and pomfret till its bones and then a happy Burrrppppy Meowww was what made Ajinkya smile that he has done his job well and good and this place is just the best place for a good fish curry and rice.
The freshness of the fish be if the Khapi or pomfret or Surmai or prawns or Saundalya was something that Fish O Fish can proudly boast about and the readers venture out to savour some. The place is nestled in the busy bylanes of karve road and promises to satisfy pamper replenish and build up your love for sea food over and over again.
If you trust Moshezz, do see the sea food of this place and devour up some to fill up your tummy n soul with the goodness of seafood served...
Read more#Negative review for Fish O Fish restaurant at Kothrud. We visited this restaurant today for lunch.Had called the hotel to confirm if we will get fresh fish and prawns today being a Thursday. The manager Mr. Lakshman confirmed saying everything is absolutely fresh and that he himself has purchased this morning. After visiting this place after almost 7 years (as in between we were out of town and then did not visit restaurants much due to Covid. We ordered a Pomfret thali which consisted of 1very small promfret, prawn curry (tinniest 4 prawns with a horrible stink and awful taste of the prawns and the curry (they were looking blackish in colour). My husband eats absolutely bland food,so requested them to make a prawn pulao with only few khadamasala and prawns. Here again the same tiny, blackish prawns were used, awful stink and hardly prawns were seen, only stinky rice.We requested the manager to give 1plate of Surmai fry ONLY if they have Surmai (unmarinated in masala) and asked them to put only salt, haldi and lemon to it.They agreed...but they served us Surmai fry after washing the marinated pieces and hence it was not the way we had ordered. We requested to talk to the owner Mr.Ajinkya as he was out.The manager after great reluctance (after brainwashing the owner) handed the phone (landline)to us. The worst part was the owner instead of being humble in his demeanor was very arrogant and argued saying the prawns are "natural "and that they are very fresh etc.. I also asked him to taste them but he was giving all kind of excuses and arguing. The staff too were quite arrogant after we complaint. We paid full amount of the bill, left hungry, no discounts were given nor did they accept there mistake. Folks, would definitely recommend Fish curry rice,Vernekars and Guru sawant katta for EXCELLENT,FRESH AND RELIABLE...
