Title: 🏮 China Town, Chennai – 40 Years and Still the Best for Authentic Chinese!
I've been visiting China Town, Chennai since 1984—yes, four whole decades—and let me tell you, the experience has been consistently amazing. It’s rare to find a place that preserves its original charm, authenticity, and taste for this long. But China Town pulls it off, year after year.
This is one of the first places in Chennai that introduced people like me to real Chinese cuisine, long before it became trendy. Their dishes still have that rich, unmistakable flavour—no unnecessary fusion or shortcuts, just pure, authentic Chinese style that’s stood the test of time.
And let’s not forget their signature Fried Ice Cream—a true crowd-puller and a nostalgic favourite! I still remember the first time I ordered it, and now when I bring foreign friends, their eyes literally go “wow” when they see it. That crisp, hot outside and cold, creamy inside? An absolute must-try.
A special mention to Mr. Ravi, the longtime manager. He’s been there for as long as I can remember—always warm, welcoming, and truly passionate about what the place stands for. He’s not just a manager, but part of the reason people keep returning.
The ambiance still carries that classic, cozy feel. It’s not flashy, but that’s exactly why it feels so genuine. It’s the kind of restaurant that doesn’t need to reinvent itself—because it’s already perfectly rooted in tradition.

Read moreThe time that we entered the restaurant was 10pm and we were skeptical whether the items in the menu card would be available/not. But we were not let down by the restaurant, whatever we ordered was available and the taste of each and every dish was impeccable. We were very very hungry, the items that we ordered were: Chicken Soupy noodle with dumplings - The quantity was good and it had a nice chicken broth with chicken dumplings, veggies and noodles. Prawn Dimsum - The Dimsum was simply awesome and we could taste the prawn in each and every bite, the spicy sauce was good with the Dimsum. Schezwan chicken noodle - The quantity was huge and we loved the taste of the noodle. Kung Pao chicken gravy - It was one the best Kung Pao gravy we've had Mandarin Pan Fried Noodles - The sauce along with the noodle was really good and the noodles was pan fried to the correct consistency. The manager of the restaurant was kind enough to us by letting us order desserts and the time which we ordered was around 10.55pm😅 All of the desserts which we ordered were yummm and the desserts that we ordered were: Sizzling brownie with Ice cream Fried Ice cream Custard pudding.
I would say that China Town was really friendly inspite of us entering the restaurant very late and all of them waited patiently until we finished our dinner. The ambience was also really really good, thank you China...
Read moreChina Town is located above copper chimney in a cramped area, often hidden from people and only accessed in the side entrance. Not exactly a hidden gem kind of place, just poorly located
But they serve pretty decent Chinese food. Owned by the same company as Ente Keralam and the Marina, they’re known to be good.
I tried the Fish Sizzler, which the chef made in sweet and sour sauce for me after requesting it as it wasn’t an option initially. Like the accommodating nature, I loved the dish in the end. Fish was soft and the sauce was mild
Also tried crispy honey lotus stem which was very tasty, and their caramel custard was also a hit. On another occasion; I’ve tried the wontons and the Honey garlic chicken- just classic decent Chinese food.
Nothing special about their noodles or fried rice. It’s bland and needs some side dish with it like it is usually in Chinese restaurants. If you’re a vegetarian, the starters are good but I would personally find the mains very boring due to this
The ambience is actually great with an oriental cozy vibe. I just heavily dislike how cramped the location is, getting into the restaurant is very difficult.
One of my favourite Chinese spots along with...
