While the location of the hotel is very good, the approach is very cumbersome. The road has divider which involves driving some distance to take a U turn and enter the hotel. Being a very narrow and busy road and location of hotel just near a signal light means during peak traffic hours you have to wait till signal turns green to get a chance to enter the hotel IN gate. Portico is very small and can take only one car at a time which means if a car is already there you wait in driveway for it to move after guests and luggage are unloaded. Absolutely no parking inside hotel but thankfully 24 hrs valet parking is available. Parking is done at a small compound 2 buildings away on the same side as hotel so you go against one way traffic for 70-80 mtrs. Even this parking lot can take maximum 12-14 cars thats it. Hotel is old and quite small ( 85 rooms + annexe with another 35-40 rooms). Check in was quick and easy due to prior reservation. Our 4th floor rooms was satisfactory but not large enough to accommodate an extra bed so only double occupancy feasible unless you want to cram the room. Room furnishing and furniture were sufficient and good with 2 telephones, bedside control unit for lights etc. Though the centralised AC took along time to cool even at 20 degree setting in November climate wonder how much longer it would take in peak Chennai summer temperatures. The bed as in most hotels was terribly saggy and most uncomfortable to sleep and was much higher than standards of most quality hotels. And watch out for the treacherous strip ( 2ft x 6 ft) of carpet laid at the foot of bed...a sure killer if you step on it in a hurry....its slips like skates on ice and you will have a nasty fall with dangerous consequences. I checked the carpet had no rubber backing and was wool on polished marble resulting in zero friction and excellent slider. Bathroom was satisfactory with good plumbing fittings though the WC flush valve requires extra effort for full prolonged flushing due to a mechanical lever type flush valve. Bath tub doubles as shower place also....a bit cumbersome in the cramped space. Bathroom amenities and towels were at satisfactory levels...no issues there. Hot water was on 24 hrs. Tea coffee maker with requisite sachets, in room safe, spacious wardrobe with hangers were all very satisfactory. LEd TV, writing desk with separate chair all nice. The rooms service menu was very extensive and covered all cuisines and tastes though we did not have an opportunity to try them out as we had all our meals at the wedding which we attended. So I cant comment on the taste of food but considering the prices on menu I sincerely hope they are good. The Bar as is the case with most hotels in Chennai is tucked away in the basement away from public glare as chennaites assume drinking is to be done surreptitiously as if it were a crime( this is a curse to Bars all over Tamil Nadu). But then the Bar here called Alchemy was pretty good with chilling AC ensuring you swig down a few drinks quickly to warm up yourself. Again an extensive list of spirits and beers including imported brands but also priced quite high ( thanks to multiple taxes). We had a chance to try out two snack dishes along with our drinks -a veg( mushroom) and non veg( chicken) and must admit both were very good....so I presume their food menu must also be quite good. Service was uniformly good by all staff members..Hosuekeeping, bell boys, valets all courteous and effective. Over all a good hotel to stay but could do with a renovation due to its age and parking is a bug bear for guests coming in own cars. No harm in trying it out for your next stay. Current prices Rs.3920 net AI for bed and free breakfast on twin occupancy. oh yes I forgot...you get free Wi fi internet in rooms okay speed nothing great but helps you to...
Read moreRooms are fantastic as I have mentioned in other bullet points in my review. But there are important issues with this hotel that you'd need to know.
I came to this hotel after I left another hotel at night when I could not tolerate the mosquitos over there. That hotel was also close to the Consulate but was cheaper. After I moved in, mosquitos flew in from God knows where and I had a terrible time there. So while I had checked in at 7PM, I left that hotel at 10PM (and forewent Rs. 2000 I gave them for rent) and came to Raj Park hoping that the significantly higher price of the room (Rs. 5000) would buy me the comfort I was looking for.
I asked the front desk guys "are there mosquitos in the room?" and his response was "please come in and check it yourself." I went in there, and checked the room. There did not seem to be any mosquitos but you never know. It is only after you checkin that you'd find out if mosquitos are flying in from the AC duct/toilet pipes or not. So before coughing up Rs. 5000, I asked him again "are there mosquitos in the room" and his response was "you saw the room right? That's the way it is."
I am paying Rs 5000 for one night. Could you at least have the courtesy to either say "there can be mosquitos here" or "there will not be any mosquitos. I can assure that". I mean for Rs 5000 a night, couldn't you ensure that your rooms are bug free? If so, couldn't you swear by it?
I booked with them directly. So while booking, he said checkout is 24 hours after checkin. They literally called me five times asking me as to when I'd be checking out. Again, I paid Rs. 5000. Once you take in the money, you should learn to shut it till 24 hours of checkin. You told me that checkout time is 24 hours after checkin. Why the hell are you calling me multiple times to check my checkout time?
I was initially given a room on the first floor. I insisted on a higher floor because of the fear of mosquitos. I was trying to minimize the risk by getting a room on a higher floor. So from first, he moved me to the sixth floor. Seventh floor is a marriage hall.
There were carpenters banging on wood the entire night on the seventh floor. I then complained to the receptionist. He said "we will ask them to stop". It did not stop. I went to seventh floor and asked them to stop. They didn't. I went to the receptionist in person this time telling them that it had not stopped. They sent someone to my room later who told me it will stop in five minutes. It went on till 2:30AM in the night. This happened in spite of coughing up Rs. 5000 for one night.
Long and short of it is that this hotel has great rooms but the receptionists are arrogant, and you should be prepared to face issues like the one I...
Read moreI have checked in to Hotel Raj park this Monday. Stayed for one day, and it was my first ever stay in any hotel in Chennai. The hotel is near to US consulate-where we go for our VISA application(though i didnt went for VISA), then near to Marina Beach and a half an hour journey to railway stations. I had selected this hotel out of many options Google search / Make My Trip/ Go ibibo provided me. I finally booked it through Make My Trip because i got better discounts.
As i checked with the locals about Hotel Raj Park, it is one of the famous old Hotel in that area. Back then it was one of the renowned and popular hotel, which was always been the first choice for people. Now the competition has gone up, as a no of Big Names have opened up there star hotels in that location because of the demand. Hotel Raj park still stand tall and is giving a good competition.
So after a lot of checking i have end up with this Hotel because: Near to my office Tariff is equivalent to all other big hotels near by. They offer swimming pool, gym, complimentary breakfast etc. The best part and the only part that made me to filter out my choices is 24HR CHECK IN. Irrespective how u book your rooms, hotel provides u a 24 Hr Check in. No other hotel/site can offer you this facility. U can believe me because i have checked with each and every nearby hotels.
I normally reaches Chennai early morning and then i have to attend office and meetings. And this 12noon to 12noon check in policy is active in almost all the hotels & in almost all the locations and states. Its very difficult to plan ur tour with your limited budget. As a girl and travelling alone i needed my comfort and safety in hand with the limited budget i have. And Hotels like Raj park they made my life easy by being flexible.
The staffs are the most humble staffs, i have ever met. As we know South India is known for its cultural values and traditions, i couldnot expect less hospitality from the staffs. They welcomes all so cordially and make you feel at home and will take care of all your necessities properly.
The only minus point i can point out is, my bathoorm Bathtub outlet is not properly planned for draining, for which when we release the water to drain out it start gussing on the floor than getting drained out. But i checked with few of my colleague who too have checked in the same hotel after getting the good reviews from me, they didnt faced the same problem. It was one room may be where i was destined to book my stay. And which allowed me to point out one negative point atleast in my reviews.
Wish you all...
