My Honest Review of Nagercoil Arya Bhavan – Too Much Hype, Too Little Taste
We had planned to eat idiyappam for dinner and searched online. Google showed Nagercoil Arya Bhavan as one of the suggestions, with a 4.3-star rating. Without checking any reviews, we rushed to the hotel, excited and hopeful.
Upon arrival, we had to give our name and the total member count and wait in a queue. We were very curious and assumed the food would be excellent based on the crowd and the rating.
We waited outside for around 27 minutes, during which we noticed their hospitality was quite good. There were already around 50–70 people in line.
When our turn came, we were allotted a seat in the AC room, which had great ambience. The server brought us the menu, and that’s when the first surprise hit – the prices were unexpectedly high. Though we initially went there to have idiyappam, after seeing the menu we decided to try a few other items along with just one plate of idiyappam.
After placing our order, we waited around 15 minutes, watching their in-house TV displaying celebrity images and chef photos, which added to the hype. Meanwhile, more people continued queuing outside.
Our food finally arrived, and we began with the manchow soup, which was genuinely excellent and raised our expectations even further. Then came the podi roast (₹130), which was just average in taste and felt disappointing. But we still had hopes pinned on the idiyappam.
After another 6–7 minutes, the idiyappam finally arrived – and it was a huge letdown. Honestly, idiyappam served by street vendors would be 100 times better than what we were served here. It completely shattered our cravings.
Next, we tried the veg dum biryani, which was also served cold, just like the idiyappam. Though the vegetables were cooked properly, there was no salt and zero flavour. It was just basmati rice with a biryani appearance but no biryani taste. In fact, I would recommend renaming it from “biryani” to “veg rice.”
Lastly, we ordered a coffee, which was 50% foam and 50% coffee – and it was cold right from the moment it was placed on our table. And to be clear – except the manchow soup, every other item was served cold, which is completely unacceptable.
By the end of the meal, our idiyappam cravings were completely ruined, and we made a firm decision never to visit this hotel again.
Food Ratings:
Manchow Soup – ★★★★★ (5/5)
Podi Roast – ★★★☆☆ (3/5)
Idiyappam – ☆☆☆☆☆ (0/5)
Veg Dum Biryani – ☆☆☆☆☆ (0/5) as biryani, ★★★☆☆ (3/5) as veg rice
I also noticed photos of some well-known chefs displayed inside. It seems the management is using them for promotional purposes. Honestly, please don’t ruin their names for advertisement. I now doubt whether they genuinely endorsed this place. I won’t mention any names here – those who’ve been to the hotel will recognize them.
Conclusion:
Do not visit this hotel if you're looking for tasty, hot, or value-for-money food. You can visit only if you’re curious to see the crowds, the fountain, and the sculpture work outside the hotel – but not...
